Landscape Internship
The Internship:
The Landscape Internship at The John Hay Estate at The Fells, also known as The Fells, offers a unique blend of historical education and ecological experiences. The Fells is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a preservation project of the Garden Conservancy and is located on the beautiful shores of Lake Sunapee. This is a hands-on position with the following key responsibilities:
Historical Education:
- Engage with visitors and educate them about the Estate’s rich history.
- Conduct garden tours, sharing insights about the formal gardens and preserved woodlands.
- Explore the achievements of statesman John M. Hay, the former lakeside summer homeowner.
Ecological Activities:
- Participate in various landscape maintenance tasks, including planting, transplanting, digging, dividing, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, watering, weeding, pruning, brush removal, pest management, and waste disposal.
- Collaborate with volunteers and potentially lead them in garden-related activities.
- Assist with trail walks, connecting visitors to the natural lakeside setting.
- Contribute to the preservation of the Estate’s scenic beauty and wildlife refuge.
Interdisciplinary Learning:
- While history and ecology are central, interns can explore other fields such as art, art history, education, nature writing, and museum studies.
- Gain a holistic understanding of the Estate’s significance and contribute to its mission.
Requirements:
- Candidates should be able to work a 35-hour week, be outside in all weather conditions, be willing to safely lift 30 pounds, and have a valid driver’s license.
- Familiarity with woody, annual, and perennial plants is desirable.
- Weekend and evening hours are required to assist with fundraising social events.
Work Schedule /Housing:
The intern should be available to start approximately mid-May and end mid-August, and to be flexible both in work activities and schedule to accommodate the demands of The Fells busy summer season.
Compensation:
The intern receives a stipend of $5,000, paid bi-weekly with taxes withheld.
Private room and board are provided in the historic Main House.
