Position: Education Specialist (Phlebotomy Instructor)

Reports to: Director of Adult Education

Hours: Part-Time

Salary: $100.00 per hour                                                           

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

Union Settlement Adult Education is seeking a skilled and dedicated Phlebotomy Instructor to join our team and play a pivotal role in training and educating future medical professionals in the art and science of phlebotomy. The Educational Specialist (Phlebotomy Instructor) reports to the Adult Education Director and has the overall responsibility of the development and implementation of the academic curriculum, program compliance and quality assurance. The agency has embraced the concept of a fully integrated system of care for all consumers of service.  This requires that all agency staff assess the client’s needs holistically and see it as their responsibility to connect the client with services needed – internal or external to the agency – regardless of the door through which the consumer enters the system.  The ideal candidate will be a hard-working professional able to undertake a variety of teaching approaches. This person will be comfortable working with a high degree of attention to detail and discretion as well as incorporating new and effective ways to achieve better results.

Responsibilities:

• Design and deliver comprehensive training programs, conducting practical demonstrations, and evaluating students' progress to ensure they are well-prepared for real-world phlebotomy practices.
• Create and update curriculum materials, lesson plans, and educational resources to ensure comprehensive coverage of phlebotomy techniques, safety protocols, equipment usage, and patient interaction.
• Lead engaging classroom lectures, hands-on training sessions, and interactive discussions, effectively conveying the theoretical and practical aspects of phlebotomy to students.
• Perform live demonstrations of phlebotomy procedures, emphasizing proper techniques, aseptic practices, and patient comfort.
• Supervise and guide students during laboratory sessions, allowing them to practice venipuncture, capillary puncture, and specimen handling under controlled conditions.
• Instill a strong emphasis on safety measures, infection control, and hygiene practices to ensure the well-being of both patients and students.
• Provide individualized attention and guidance to students who require additional assistance, adapting teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles.
• Develop and administer assessments, quizzes, and practical exams to gauge students' understanding and skill proficiency, providing constructive feedback for improvement.
• Maintain accurate records of students' attendance, performance, and development, reporting progress to Program Director and administrative staff as needed.
• Stay updated with the latest trends, techniques, and advancements in phlebotomy practices to continually enhance the quality and relevance of the training program.
• Collaborate with administrative staff, fellow instructors, and medical professionals to ensure a well-rounded and up-to-date curriculum that aligns with industry standards.
• Instruct adults to prepare for NHA CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) certification exam.
• Review the academic curriculum of the program with Program Director. 
• Identify program needs to the Program Director.
• Attend staff development training, program meetings and related conferences. 
• Perform other duties as assigned. 
• Build an effective classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate for adult learners.
• Must implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, including group or individualized instruction.
• Must be well-organized.
• Must be comfortable speaking in front of an audience. 
• Must present materials to students each day in an engaging and easy to understand manner.
• Maintain and ensure HIPAA confidentiality of records (daily)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology
  • Safe collection of blood and other specimens
  • Venipuncture technique
  • Basic laboratory procedures

Qualifications:

• Associate degree in a science or medical field, required.
• Certification as a Phlebotomist (e.g., ASCP, NHA), required
• Certification in Phlebotomy Instruction, required 
• Certified in Best Plus and Best Literacy, preferred
• Three (3) years of experience working as a Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Laboratory Technician
• Three (3) years of experience teaching adult learners
• Ability and interest in working with diverse populations
• Ability to instruct in a manner that develops confidence and encourages creativity
• Ability to engage students who may have had no prior, or limited, access to technology and or language learning
• Knowledge of principles and practices related to adult literacy, preparing lesson plans, and working knowledge of Microsoft Suite
• Must be a self-starter, highly-organized, patient and able to work well with others
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 30 pounds
