Position: Educational Specialist (Culinary Instructor - ServSafe)                                            

Department: Adult Education

Reports to: Director of Adult Education                                                       

Hours: Part-time 

Hourly Rate: $100.00                                                                                       

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

 

Union Settlement Adult Education is seeking an Educational Specialist (Culinary Instructor - ServSafe) to provide in-person training for food and beverage safety, specifically all areas of ServSafe certification (Food Handler, Food Manager, Alcohol, Allergens, and Workplace). The Educational Specialist reports to the Adult Education Director and has the overall responsibility of the development and implementation of the academic curriculum, program compliance and quality assurance. The agency has embraced the concept of a fully integrated system of care for all consumers of service.  This requires that all agency staff assess the client’s needs holistically and see it as their responsibility to connect the client with services needed – internal or external to the agency – regardless of the door through which the consumer enters the system.  The ideal candidate will be a hard-working professional able to undertake a variety of teaching approaches. This person will be comfortable working with a high degree of attention to detail and discretion as well as incorporating new and effective ways to achieve better results.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement academic curriculum for students seeking to attain ServSafe certification and food and beverage safety skills. 
  • Assess the educational needs of the students. 
  • Research and develop new resources and materials to enhance the curriculum.
  • Review the academic curriculum of the program with Program Director. 
  • Maintain records of class attendance and student participation.
  • Design and recommend individualized curricular needs for students.
  • Meet with students to review progress and evaluate need for additional supports.
  • Provide classroom and hands-on management training.
  • Model the professional behaviors, language, and activities of a chef/food service professional
  • Lead and organize the entire class, including purchasing ingredients, setting up, teaching the class in a hands-on manner, and cleaning up.
  • Ensures high standards of sanitation and cleanliness are maintained throughout the experience by keeping work area and guest areas clean and organized.
  • Consider student individual employability plans and contribute to monthly evaluations of progress in program.
  • Identify program needs to the Program Director.
  • Prepare and coordinate educational lesson plans.
  • Prepare monthly narrative progress reports for all students. 
  • Attend staff development training, program meetings and related conferences.  
  • Assist case manager/office administration with student follow up.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Must be well-organized.
  • Develop and/or utilize lesson plans that reflect an understanding of how best to teach class topics and/or cuisines in a hands-on class
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of an audience. 
  • Must present materials to students each day in an engaging and easy to understand manner. 
  • Build an effective classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate for adult learners.
  • Must implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, including group or individualized instruction.
  • Maintain and ensure HIPAA confidentiality of records (daily).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • Knife skills and all standard methods of cooking.
    • All skills required to pass the NOCTI (both written and practical) for teacher placement.
    • Proper care and use of tools and equipment used in the industry.
    • Practice of all safety procedure standards in the industry.

Qualifications:

  • Culinary Degree/Certificate, AOS, AAS, required.
  • Bachelor's degree in culinary arts or hospitality, preferred.
  • ServSafe instructor/proctor certificate, required.
  • ServSafe Manager Certificate, required.
  • Must be able to teach SERV Safe: Manager, Food Handler, Allergens, Workplace, and Alcohol.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of culinary teaching experience.
  • Certified in Best Plus and Best Literacy, preferred.
  • Experience in catering, preferred.
  • Ability and interest in working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to instruct in a manner that develops confidence and encourages creativity.
  • Ability to engage students who may have had no prior, or limited, access to technology and or language learning.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to adult literacy and lesson plan preparation.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly-organized, patient and able to work well with others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 30 pounds.
