Union Settlement is an East Harlem based nonprofit organization founded in 1895. For 128 years, Union Settlement has provided critical and innovative programming to children, youth, families, and older adults. As a pioneer of the settlement house movement, Union Settlement continues to meet the needs of the ever-changing East Harlem community through its core programs. Position: Enrollment Specialist                                                                   

Department: Community Childcare Connection

Reports to: Director of C4

Hours: Full-Time

Salary: $55,000                                                                         

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Location: On-site

 Position Summary:

The Enrollment Specialist is responsible for working with families to successfully identify, apply for, and enroll in appropriate childcare support. Enrollment Specialist will work with families to ensure they understand their childcare assistance options and to complete their childcare assistance applications. Enrollment Specialist will also process childcare assistance applications assigned by their Project Lead or supervisor and determine eligibility for childcare assistance. The Enrollment Specialist will also work with families deemed eligible for child care assistance to identify and enroll with an appropriate child care provider.

Responsibilities:

  • Support eligible families with enrollment in childcare.
  • Meet with families to discuss all childcare options available in NYC and assess families’ potential eligibility for those options.
  • Assist families with the application processes for the childcare option(s) they may be eligible for and that best fits their needs and wants, including childcare assistance through vouchers or contract-based care.
  • Assess families for any non-childcare related needs and make referral for services or benefits, when appropriate.
  • Process Applications for Childcare Assistance and Making Eligibility Determinations.
  • Process childcare applications for childcare assistance and make eligibility determinations consistent procedures defined by with laws, regulations and policies.
  • Connect with families that are missing documentation in order to help them complete their submitted application to avoid unnecessary denials of services.
  • Update necessary databases based on eligibility determinations.
  • Physically or electronically file case information, as needed.
  • Communicate with families about their eligibility determination, as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries from families about the status of their case.
  • Build a strong understanding of childcare options within the project catchment.
  • Help families identify an appropriate childcare provider, by using online databases, NYC Childcare Resource and Referral agencies, and relationships with childcare providers;
  • Work with family and preferred childcare providers to ensure the provider completes all paperwork to qualify with the City to serve children in receipt of childcare assistance.

Qualifications:

  • AA/BA in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or related field.
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience in an educational, community, or business setting serving families, children, or adults.
  • Multilingual English/Spanish, English/Chinese.
  • Willing to travel locally to promote program and events.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong writing, analytic, technical, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of principles of family support and case management.
  • Experience in working with families in a way that is dignified, respectful and supportive.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Able to balance urgency with quality – to serve families well, quickly and accurately.
  • Able to work both independently and in a team.
  • An excellent communicator in English and Spanish.
  • A fast learner that is willing to ask questions to gain deeper understanding and clarification.
  • Driven and self-motivated, with a desire to solve problems.
  • Comfortable with computers and using multiple database systems.
