International Student Advisor

Key Responsibilities:

Performs general advising to students on issues of immigration, travel, employment, financial and personal issues, cultural shock and academic adjustment. 20%

Maintains, analyzes, and assures quality of data within the ISSO and its reporting functions to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Performs necessary actions in TerraDotta, PeopleSoft and SEVIS as required with advising functions to international graduate and undergraduate students. Performs ISSO check-ins. 40%

Performs advising/workshops on travel and visa renewal issues, visa status extensions, taxes, employment issues, cross-cultural awareness, and other support programs for international students and scholars and their dependents. 15%

Generates documents for newly admitted students. Assists in communication with students/scholars concerning their visa documents. 20%

Other duties required. 5%

 

Education & Work Experience:

B.A./B.S. /M.A./M.S. preferred. 

3-5 years’ work experience preferred.

 

What you need to succeed:

Demonstrated experience working as a Designated School Official and/or Alternate Responsible Officer in a college or university setting.

Experience in working with a diverse community in a higher education setting.

Excellent computer skills and experience in web-based applications and data management.

Strong organization and analytic skills.

Attention to detail and accuracy in preparing immigration documents and reports.

Comfort working in a multitasking environment essential.

Creative problem solving/troubleshooting.

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively with people from other cultures; attention to detail; U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident Status required by regulation (to serve as J-1 Alternate Responsible Officer); working knowledge of F and J visa regulations and SEVIS.
