Dates: June 24 - August 2nd, 2024 (July 4-5th No Programming)

 

What is BASE?

The Biomedical Academy of STEM Exploration, or BASE, is a four-week paid summer program that is offered to high school students, ages 16 and older at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Childrens Hospital..  The foundation of this program has been built around the three pillars of curiosity, confidence, and growth.  The goal of BASE is to provide high school students the opportunities to engage in career exploration, strengthen laboratory skills, and planning for what comes after high school. Be it, to be competitive for undergraduate research or an entry level position after graduation, we will provide experiences that align.  The curriculum is designed to prepare youth in widening their scope of the medical and research landscape through project and lab-based learning, mentorship, and real-world application. 

 

The Ideal Candidates

We are seeking four individuals who are interested in supporting a small collab of students through their time at BASE.  You will collaborate with our K-12 Education Coordinator to ensure the highest level of individual support for each student through goal planning, check-ins and relationship building.  You will be grouped based upon student interest and support your collab through a series of skill building classroom and lab sessions that will support their individual goals.  Before our students arrive, the BASE team will have our own time to understand our own growth goals, how each project works, and prepare to make our program run smoothly. 

The ideal Collab Advisor would come to our team with:

  • A passion for a field with the STEM diaspora.
  • A desire to share that passion with youth from the Columbus area.
  • An understanding of how systemic oppression privileges and oppresses different identity groups.

The ideal Collab Advisor would come to our team excited to develop skills in these areas:

  • The STEM education landscape, leadership & pedagogy.
  • Mentoring youth who are underrepresented in the STEM field.
  • Community engagement through a lens of health equity.

Responsibilities & Requirements

Below are the responsibilities of this contracted position:

  • Attend training at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute from June 24th-July 3rd, 2024.
  • Mentor a collab of four high school students through a series or projects, and experiments.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and potentially facilitating programming for 12-24 students.
  • Work closely with BASE staff to ensure the program runs smoothly.
  • Work one-on-one with students in your collab to create SMART goals, and action steps to achieve the goal.
  • Hospital HR Onboarding prior to the start of the position including a background check and oral swab drug test.

Qualifications

Below are the qualifications expected of a Collab Advisor:

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in an education or a STEM field
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a lab setting, or at least one college level course with a lab component with a B- or above.
  • An interest in working with underrepresented youth in a mentor/educator role.
  • A dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all forms.
  • Have a basic understanding of social emotional learning.

Compensation

This project will pay for 6 weeks.  July 4th and 5th will be non-workdays.  You will be compensated at a rate that is equal to or greater than $15/hour.  You should prepare for an 8-hour workday each day, Monday through Friday. For planning purposes, please address any days you will need to miss during the contract period in your cover letter.
