Position: Lead Driver                                                                                      

Department: Older Adult Services

Reports to: Meals on Wheels Director

Hours: Part-Time; M-F 9:00am - 3:30pm

Salary: $18.53 per hour                                                                         

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Location: On-site; 2205 First Avenue

 Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Meals on Wheels (MOW) Director The MOW Lead Driver will primarily be responsible for driving a Union Settlement van and/or truck to locations in East Harlem to deliver meals to homebound clients. In addition, they will work closely with the MOW Director in directing and expediting daily meal deliveries.

Responsibilities:

• Deliver meals daily to homebound clients. 
• Use appropriate heating and cooling devices when packing meals. 
• Package meals into hot and cold containers each day for delivery. 
• Maintain accurate daily route sheet. 
• Follow agency protocol and procedure to report any difficulty with meal delivery (i.e. client not home, not answering door) or changes in client status (i.e. slurred speech, deterioration in client appearance, confusion). 
• Follow agency protocol and procedure to report any observable issues at the clients’ homes (visible tampering with door or locks). 
• Follow agency protocol and procedure to report any information the client provides regarding planned absences (hospital stays, vacations, etc.) that would prevent the client from being home to receive his or her meal. 
• Clean and sanitize all delivery bags, boxes, holding containers and truck compartments daily 
• Assist with kitchen and/or other program duties as assigned by the MOW Director, the Deputy Director of Older Adult Services, or the Director of Older Adult Services. 
• Train, and supervise delivery staff on daily tasks   
• Schedule and secure driver/deliverer coverage  
• Inspect all vehicles at the beginning and end of shift (I.e. gas, mileage, any damage, or repair needs) and report any issues to the MOW Director  
• Manage vehicle log, ensure vehicle Inspection log is completed accurately at each shift  
• Expedite meal deliveries by route and ensure accurate count  
• Record daily receiving food temperatures  
• Assist MOW Program Director with Emergency Meals, Supplemental Meals, and Holiday Boxes.  
• Assist MOW Program Director with transportation of vehicles for regular and special maintenance  
• Assist with admin tasks as needed (i.e. optimizing routes)  
• Provide route coverage during emergencies such as staff shortages   
• Assist with special projects and other duties assigned by the MOW Director  

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid license to operate a vehicle in New York State required.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience operating a vehicle.
• No convictions for driving while intoxicated in the prior two (2) years.
• No more than one moving violation within the prior two (2) years.
• English speaking and writing proficiency; Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (30+ pounds), as well as walk to deliver meals daily.
• Good organizational ability, time management, and interpersonal skills (ability to connect with clients and work with a team).
• Knowledge of and desire to work with aging populations.
