About the Opportunity

826 Boston seeks mission-driven change-makers to join the 826 Boston AmeriCorps Fellowship for the 2024-2025 school year. This is an exciting opportunity to join a cohort of 12 AmeriCorps members and play a key role in driving impact to serve more students in the Boston Public Schools through 826 Boston’s innovative Writers’ Room Programs. The priority application deadline for this position is March 15, 2024. After that date, applications will be considered on a rolling basis. The 826 Boston AmeriCorps Fellowship will begin on Monday, August 12, 2024 and end date on July 25, 2025.

 

826 Boston offers AmeriCorps members a compensation package of $31,200:

  • $29,000 awarded bi-weekly for service between August 12, 2024 and July 25, 2025
  • $1,200 awarded monthly via $100/month travel stipend
  • $1,000 retention bonus for completing 1,700 hours by July 25, 2025

 

Service members receive the Eli Segal Education Award of $7,395 upon the completion of a success year of service, and service members are eligible for additional compensation for committee work that advances the organization’s mission. See below for more details on compensation and benefits. 

Key Responsibilities and Functions

Tutoring students

  • Serve as an academic and social-emotional support to students in 826 Boston programming through class visits, individual drop-ins, writing workshops, and publication projects
  • Support students’ creativity, expression, and social-emotional development through one-on-one conferences, small-group collaboration, and whole-class instruction leading creativity workshops in line with curricular goals and other developmentally appropriate goals 
  • Model positive social-emotional, and problem-solving behaviors and strategies for learners

Program coordination

  • Assist with data collection, analysis, and results-sharing associated with 826 Boston’s in-school and after-school programming, including tracking student visits and hours and  participating in quarterly team-wide reports
  • In conjunction with your staff supervisor, collaborate with Boston Public Schools teachers across all disciplines to develop creative expression projects 
  • Support 826 Boston publishing projects and book release parties, including traveling to 826 headquarters in Roxbury as needed
  • Communicate project progress to your staff supervisor and seek counsel when help is needed to execute a goal
  • Support school-organized student- and family-focused events as needed, representing the 826 Boston Writers’ Room

AmeriCorps High School Program Specialists will serve at one of the following 826 Boston Writers’ Rooms for the school year, joining a school-based team comprising the Writers’ Room Manager, a corps of interns and volunteers, and (potentially) one other AmeriCorps High School Program Specialist. 826 Boston operates Writers’ Rooms at the following Boston public high schools:

  • John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, 55 Malcolm X Boulevard, Roxbury
  • Jeremiah E. Burke High School, 60 Washington Street, Dorchester
  • Boston International Newcomers Academy, 100 Maxwell Street, Dorchester
  • Margarita Muñiz Academy, 20 Child Street, Jamaica Plain
  • New Mission High School, 655 Metropolitan Ave, Hyde Park

High School Program Specialists will be placed at a site by the 826 Boston team and will serve from that location Mondays-Thursdays. Additionally, AmeriCorps High School Program Specialists will serve either at 826 Boston’s writing and tutoring center at 3035 Washington Street, Roxbury, or remotely on Fridays, during summer training, and for weekly professional development sessions. 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • 1+ year experience working with young people grades K-12 
  • Interest in supporting students, their teachers, and their wider school community in an urban setting
  • Ability to participate in open communication to build community and foster team goals, including the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Proficiency in organizational, time management, project management, and resource management skills 
  • Experience with strategies to support neurodivergent students a plus 
  • Experience with journalism, creative writing, or book publishing preferred
  • Familiarity with the Boston Public Schools system preferred 
  • Ability to switch gears quickly depending on student needs, from encouraging creativity and self-expression to helping students focus on difficult academic challenges

 

Compensation and Benefits

826 Boston offers AmeriCorps members a compensation package of $31,200:

In addition to the compensation package, 826 Boston offers a comprehensive benefits plan including:

  • Professional Development: As an AmeriCorps Service Member, you will build upon your personal strengths and develop transferable skills, such as teamwork, leadership, decision-making, project management and relationship development. Further, you will develop your knowledge of public school systems, school and community partnerships, and the day-to-day operations of a nonprofit organization. 826 Boston provides AmeriCorps Members with formal onboarding in August, ongoing training throughout the year, and individualized coaching from a direct supervisor. 
  • Education Award: As an AmeriCorps Service Member, you will qualify for an Eli Segal Education Award for every successful year of service, which includes completing 1,700 hours of service. The education award can be used to repay student loans or cover tuition costs for graduate studies at an accredited college or university and will amount to at least $7,395.
     
  • Medical Coverage: AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to apply for the Corps Network Health Plan but may decline it in favor of alternative coverage obtained through a parent, guardian, or spouse
  • Time Off: 40 hours time off + 9 holidays + a 2-week winter break 
  • Store discount: Service members can purchase merchandise from the Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute, 826 Boston’s retail home, for 30% off listed prices
  • Loan forbearance: Service members may be eligible for loan forbearance for public student loans and interest accrual payments for loans in forbearance during service 
  • Access to author events: Through service at 826 Boston, you will have the opportunity to attend author events, book release parties, and community events that spread awareness about our work
  • Member Assistance Program (MAP): Free of charge to the AmeriCorps member (826 Boston covers the cost), MAP provides accessible and quality mental health services via resources and access to counseling
