Summer Intern/Computational Drug Discovery

Department Description:

The Human Genetics and Genomics (HGG) organization is one of the key components of GSK’s research strategy. HGG supports drug discovery and development across the GSK R&D organization through integrative analysis of all forms of genetics and genomics data, as well as the development of new computational and statistical methods to understand the disease mechanisms. We contribute to multiple phases of the drug discovery pipeline and our work drives the development of new medicines for diseases with unmet medical need.

Job Description:

In this role, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to a project involving computational analysis in the realm of drug discovery, with a focus on immunology. The project entails the exploration of recent literature on innovative computational methods for analyzing immune cell responses using single cell data.

Generally, the day-to-day activities will include:

  • Review of recent developments in single cell data analyses.
  • Implementation and application of computational methods to analyze immunological data, drawing inspiration from recent advancements in the field.
  • Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to explore the integration of various datasets, contributing to a broader understanding of immune cell responses.
  • Presentation of analysis results at meetings, providing insights into potential applications for drug discovery projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Master's or PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
  • Comfortable with a programming language (such as R or Python) for complex data analysis.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts in biology and statistics.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the 10-12 week internship (May/June - August).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in statistics.
  • Experience with single cell data analysis.

  • While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite. Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses. Please refer to the position details for the requirements of each position.
