Senior Software Engineer,

Bio-med Imaging

Office of AI Research (OAIR), Office of the Scientific Director (OSD), Division of Intramural Research (DIR)

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute looking for a highly motivated and experienced software developer to join the Office of AI Research (OAIR) and develop deep learning solutions for healthcare. The OAIR is part of the Office of the Scientific Director and supports the scientific IT and computational needs of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) basic and clinical researchers.

As a software developer with the OAIR, you will help develop software to deploy deep learning solutions to researchers and clinicians at the NIH. Specifically, we are looking for a software developer to build image visualization and annotation workflows using web-based GUIs. These visualization and annotation tools will be integrated into an end-to-end deep learning platform developed by the OAIR. In this position, you will work closely with research scientists in the OAIR and collaborate with researchers across the NHLBI. You will enjoy the collaborative, innovative, and supportive environment of the intramural research division at the NHLBI.

Necessary Skills/Background

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering or related fields; 3+ years experiences in web application development.
  • Demonstrated success building GUI annotation tools for imaging data; experience working with healthcare imaging data is a plus.
  • Proficient in JavaScript and React, with a strong understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript ES6+ features. Experience with web-based visualization libraries (e.g., Three.js, vtk.js for 3D rendering) is essential.
  • Knowledge of additional front-end frameworks and libraries like Angular, Vue.js, or jQuery is a plus. While not mandatory, familiarity with backend technologies, especially Python, and experience with deep learning model integration are beneficial.
  • Experience in evaluating and working with 3rd party libraries and APIs.
  • Ability to work independently and lead software development projects across the development pipeline, from UI prototyping to deployment and maintenance.
  • Comfortable working on a dynamic team, forging collaborations, and communicating to teams from diverse disciplines; passionate about improving human health and healthcare research.

Position Duties

  • Work with UI designers, full stack developer(s), and AI researchers, actively participating in the design and development of the platform.
  • Build image visualization and annotation tools, including 3D rendering (e.g. vtk.js), large 2D image visualization, and annotation for tasks such as semantic segmentation and detection.
  • Write understandable and testable code as well as analyze and optimize codebase to develop efficient front-end solutions.
  • Assist in deploying, maintaining, and extending the platform to support health science research in the NHLBI.
  • Collect feedback and manage collaborations with system users, integrating feedback into deployable solutions.
