Boston Congressional Intern | Summer 2024

Interns play an integral role in our office operations and contribute greatly to the Senator’s work on behalf of the Commonwealth and constituents. Our goal is to provide all interns with a meaningful professional experience that will enhance their understanding of government and public service.
Senator Markey’s Boston Office is currently accepting applications for the Summer 2024 internship program.

Applications deadline: April 6, 2024

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Preference is given to applicants that apply early.

Summer session: June 3 to August 9, 2024

Exact dates are flexible based on availability.

Interns are able to work on either a part-time or full-time basis. Summer requirement 20 hour minimum per week.

Qualifications: Our internship program is directed towards current undergraduate, recent undergraduate, graduate, and associate degree. Ideal applicants are highly motivated individuals who possess strong writing, research and interpersonal skills, and are adaptable to new or fluid directions. Backgrounds in political science, international relations, environmental studies, liberal arts, and communications are desirable, but students of all fields of study are welcome to apply.

Commitment & Credit: Internship opportunities are available on a full-time or part-time basis. School credit is possible for all internships if arranged and approved by the intern’s respective college or university.

Intern Responsibilities Include:

·         Corresponding with and serving Massachusetts constituents who bring their concerns to the Senator’s office.

·         Front desk operations, including fielding constituent calls, logging opinions for the Senator, and directing casework calls to in-office staff

·         Assisting with casework, communicating with federal agencies regarding issues facing constituents and the Commonwealth at large.

·         Collaborating with office staff and fellow interns in designated pods that specialize in distinct areas of Constituent Services.

·         Sorting mail sent to the office from constituents, ranging from scheduling requests, opinion and advocacy mail, and casework.

·         Drafting and writing inquiries, letters of support, greetings and congratulatory citations.

·         Assisting with event planning and visits by the Senator throughout the Commonwealth.

Stipends:

Stipends are available to students who could not otherwise afford to live or work in Massachusetts. Interns will receive a stipend at the pre-tax rate of $15 an hour.

In order to be eligible, please submit a statement describing how this stipend will allow you to pursue your educational goals and professional aspirations through this internship experience. This essay is reviewed separately from the internship application.

Pursuant to federal law, an individual may not be hired for a paid Senate position in the continental United States unless the individual meets one of the following criteria:

·         Is a United States citizen;

·         Is lawfully admitted for permanent residence and is seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)(B);

·         Is (i) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157 or is granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 and (ii) has filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or

·         Owes allegiance to the United States. (Note: To meet this requirement, an individual must be (1) a non-citizen U.S. national born in or having ties to American Samoa or Swains Island (as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1408), or (2) a non-citizen U.S. national pursuant to section 302 of Public Law 94-241 (relating to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands).
