Summer Intern/Protein Technologies

GSK

Department Description:

Protein, Cellular, and Structural Sciences (PCSS) is a multi-disciplinary department of biochemists, biophysicists and data scientists within GSK R&D. PCSS produces engineered biological entities such as proteins and cells, as well as molecular insights from structural and biophysical techniques for both small molecule and biopharmaceutical medicine discovery programs.

Job Description:

We are seeking summer intern who is interested in contributing to target discovery through the development, troubleshooting, and automation of in-cell assays to detect protein-protein interactions. The selected candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter and will have the opportunity to work alongside protein biochemists, cell biologists, and biophysicists in a dynamic and multidisciplinary team environment.

The position will allow the selected candidate to:

  • Apply knowledge in protein biochemistry and mammalian cell biology to develop high-throughput in-cell assays to detect protein-protein interactions in support of target discovery at GSK.
  • Learn to operate and develop workflows on automated liquid handlers to express and characterize protein in mammalian cells.
  • Engage and network with scientific leaders in drug discovery across R&D at GSK.
  • Present and report their work within PCSS and across GSK R&D.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a MS or PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in basic laboratory research techniques, mammalian cell culture, and protein biochemistry.
  • An interest in developing automation as applied to assay development.
  • Strong knowledge of both mammalian cell biology and protein biochemistry.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the 12-week internship cycle (May/June - August).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Track record of working in a team-based environment.
  • Direct experience with in-cell protein-protein interaction assays would be a plus.
  • Direct experience with automated liquid handlers (CyBio FeliX, Agilent Bravo, Tecan Fluent) would be a plus.

Benefits:

  • While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite. Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses. Please refer to the position details for the requirements of each position.
  • GSK Interns and Co-ops are offered a competitive hourly pay rate and benefits. Please note, benefits eligibility determined the month following date of hire.
