Media and Communications Coordinator

ABOUT THE POSITION 

The Media & Communications Coordinator will serve a critical role in supporting the communications team with expanding organizational visibility and positioning, through media relations and supporting the Senior Program Manager of Media and Communications in the execution of Greenlining’s narrative strategy. They will provide Greenlining with a broad range of project-based and administrative support. The ideal candidate is familiar with the media landscape and has experience engaging reporters and driving earned media narratives. They are a dynamic self-starter, with high attention to detail, and a proven track-record of working collaboratively on teams, and championing social justice and racial equity. The role aims to increase the capacity of the communications team in executing our organizational goals, including positioning Greenlining staff as spokespeople and the organization as a thought leader on racial equity with earned media. This position reports to the Senior Program Manager of Media and Communications.

 

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY 

Media Engagement and Strategy

  • Develop media and communications materials that increase organizational visibility and positioning including press releases, reporter backgrounders, pitches, media advisories, and other reporter engagement materials as needed
  • In coordination with the Senior Program Manager of Media and Communications, support media engagement efforts such as the development of earned media deliverables, including fielding reporter inquiries, pitching stories, reporter education, list management, and tracking
  • Track current events and media narratives to identify opportunities for Greenlining to engage in media conversations related to the organization’s scope of work, including identifying opportunities for op-eds and Letters to the Editor
  • In coordination with the Senior Program Manager of Media and Communications, support the execution of a coordinated earned media and spokesperson strategy to effectively tell the story of The Greenlining Institute's work, enhance the organization’s visibility, and increase awareness of our scope and mission to key audiences throughout the state and nationally
  • Align media relations efforts with the digital strategy team, including collaborating to amplify earned media hits and relevant external media articles on Greenlining’s social platforms
  • Publish press releases and media hits to the organization’s website with direction from Senior Program Manager
  • Track and share media hits with Greenlining staff and Board

Media Engagement and Strategy

  • Collaborate with the Senior Program Manager to identify and implement data and metrics tracking to effectively analyze and measure impact and guide strategy improvement. Develop and maintain internal systems for tracking communications deliverables, media KPIs, and reporter contacts/engagements
  • Assist in the creation of promotional materials for Greenlining’s events and issue-based campaigns as needed i.e. Economic Summit, policy convenings, etc.
  • Produce high-quality presentation decks for internal professional development purposes to train staff, directors, and new hires on media and external communications processes
  • Thoughtfully identify opportunities to improve upon Greenlining’s current communications flow by evaluating current systems, assessing areas for growth, and delivering concise recommendations to the Communications team
  • Maintain project workflows and timelines while serving as a liaison between staff, communications team, and external stakeholders as needed
  • Support special projects and other tasks as assigned
  • Improve internal team communication by coordinating with various team members as necessary

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights, racial justice, leadership development, and mentorship
  • Interest in media and narrative strategy as a tool for advancing racial equity
  • 1-3 years of experience in a Communications, Media, and/or Nonprofit Advocacy role
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • Track record of successful collaborative relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders
  • Ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple tasks, sometimes under time pressure
  • Strong writing and communications skills, for a variety of audiences. Ability to present complex information in a meaningful, compelling way
  • Ability to work independently and also support the team’s goals and members
  • Experience using Slack, Google Suite, Wordpress, Asana, Meltwater, and content management systems (CMS) strongly preferred

The scope of responsibilities is not limited to those listed above and may change as organizational needs evolve. Specific work plan goals are developed each year to inform performance targets.

 

Compensation and Benefits

Salary based on experience.  Superb benefits including health, vision and dental insurance premiums covered at 100% for employee and dependents as well as Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance. We provide a 5% annual salary match that is immediately vested to your 401(k) retirement plan.  Work-life balance is supported with a 35-hour work week and hybrid work schedules. Many other generous paid time off programs including vacation, sick leave, paid parental leave and 14 paid Holidays.

 

Starting Salary Range:           $59,000 to $69,412
