Summer Intern/Drug Substance Development

Department Description:

Biopharm Drug Substance Development (BDSD) is an integrated R&D organization accountable for developing robust and cost-effective manufacturing processes to support clinical studies and the commercial supply of GSK’s Biopharm assets. Within BDSD, the Downstream Process Development group is responsible for the development, scale-up, and tech transfer of purification processes and innovative platform technologies for protein purification.

Job Description:

We are seeking a student for a summer internship at our Upper Merion site in King of Prussia, PA. The internship will provide an opportunity to learn about different aspects of downstream process development in a biopharmaceutical company, including (but not limited to) the evaluation of novel stationary phases and methods for the chromatographic purification of monoclonal antibodies. Throughout the internship, the candidate will be expected to:

  • Design experiments
  • Use liquid chromatography systems, analytical equipment, and data analysis software
  • Document experiments in an electronic notebook system
  • Analyze and present data
  • Write reports

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related disciplines.
  • Basic laboratory experience.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the 12-week internship (May/June - August).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of protein chemistry, protein purification, and analytical biochemistry.
  • Ability to plan and execute experiments and to analyze and draw conclusions from resulting data.
  • Working knowledge of routine laboratory procedures (e.g., making buffers, pipetting, notebook documentation).
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong learning agility and collaborative mindset.

Benefits:

  • While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite. Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses. Please refer to the position details for the requirements of each position.
