Health Supervisor (Summer Position)

**This is a summer position with a start date of June 9th and an end date of July 31st.


 

POSITION SUMMARY:

To oversee the health and safety of the camp population in a manner consistent with State of Michigan Licensing Rules, GSUSA Guidelines, and GSSEM safety activity checkpoints.


 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
  • Establish and maintain a camp infirmary that is equipped with necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Review and systematically file all incoming staff and camper health forms.
  • Review camper information and share pertinent information regarding existing medical conditions and necessary precautions with staff that have direct responsibility for the camper.
  • Collect incoming prescribed medications from campers and staff and ensure that they are dispensed in a manner consistent with required instructions.
  • Be familiar with all "standing medical orders" as written by the camp physician.
  • Act decisively and competently in medical emergencies and make appropriate decisions regarding outside treatment.
  • Maintains contact with camp physician and with local hospital facilities. Takes responsibility for calling the camp doctor's office and/or hospital as needed for camper and staff health concerns.
  • Establishes and maintains regular infirmary hours.
  • Notifies assistant camp director when parents should be advised of serious illness or accident.
  • Cleans and organizes the infirmary at the start and end of camp.
  • Carries out daily cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of the infirmary.
  • Assists in implementation of the rules of State of Michigan Licensing Guidelines, County Health Department, and GSUSA.
  • Provide nightly "on-call" assistance to units and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Be available to campers and staff at all times during duty hours.
  • File incident/accident reports promptly.
  • Assemble and re-stock first aid kits for units and activity areas.
  • Provide instruction for all staff during the pre-camp training period as related to blood-borne pathogens and required precautions and procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate communication with camper' guardians either by phone, in person, or through written documents to inform camper's families about any extended stays in the infirmary, or medical concerns that may require follow up, or higher medical care.
  • Gives instruction in health and safety and first aid to staff and campers as requested and when deemed appropriate.
  • Works with Assistant Camp Director to maintain a schedule for the health center, medication distribution and other duties as assigned.
  • Manages the camp health center including administering medication to campers and staff, treating medical needs within level of training, reporting all treatments, while following state regulations and best practices.
  • Maintains health records, certificates, records of treatment, medication logs, and other health information in an organized, up to date and confidential manner.
  • Modeling proper behaviors and practices to promote the health and safety of all campers and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age with current license as a physician, physician's assistant, RN, LPN, EMT, paramedic, OR hold American Red Cross certification in both "Responding to Emergencies" AND "CPR for the Professional Rescuer."
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Experience working with children preferred.


 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of child development stages and related needs desired as well as familiarity with healthy lifestyles.
  • Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.
  • Be able to act calmly, quickly, and give and/or follow directions during an emergency.
  • Knowledge of safety practices as applicable.
  • Must be ready and able to communicate well with girls and staff and be flexible about programming options.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Become a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA.
  • Hold the minimum of current license as a physician, physician's assistant, RN, LPN, EMT, paramedic, OR hold American Red Cross certification in both "Responding to Emergencies" AND "CPR for the Professional Rescuer."
