3D CAD Design Manager

Position Overview:
The Design Manager for jewelry is a member of the Design Team. The Design Manager is an exempt, full-time position reporting to the Senior Design Manager. The Design Manager will facilitate the timely, effective and on-brand completion of Jewelry Design collections and projects by Design team.

Responsibilities:
3D Designer

  • The primary function of the 3D Designer is to conceptualize, model and prototype design concepts into reality, through the creation of 3D models and photorealistic imagery (both static and motion)
  • Concept, design, illustrate and 3D model a high volume of jewelry styles
  • Keen design eye, attention to detail and trend understanding
  • Interpret conceptual direction from Design management, expounding upon concept- providing back sketches, mock-ups and other communication of ideas to gain approval for prototyping 
  • Maintain consistent dialogue with Design Management to ensure alignment with design intent and assortment goals during prototyping phase and throughout design process 
  • Provide customized training and mentorship on best practices for process, equipment and design aesthetic to internal and external stakeholders
  • Create and oversee creation of highest quality prototypes using 3D design software (Rhino, Matrix Gold, T-splines, Z-Brush) and/or other hands on prototype modeling methods  
  • Create photo realistic renderings using 3D rendering software (Keyshot)
    Prepare technical drawings and file savings
  • Explore traditional and non-traditional jewelry techniques as needed to create prototypes 
  • Analyze, approve or oversee edits to KS and factory produced 3D models to meet design intent, production needs and monetary goals  
  • Research jewelry relevant trends and competitor product offering   
  • Provide innovative design thinking, creative solutions, and analytical and technical insight as needed
  • Establish meetings, conduct meetings/presentations, and provide customized training


Manager

  • Guide and model for direct reports how to best interpret conceptual direction from Design Management: creating virtual mock-ups/2D photorealistic renderings, 3D CAD models, technical specifications, and ultimately finished assortments  
  • Provide and train team on proper component breakout, construction, and methods of fabrication to meet design intent and production capabilities 
  • Monitor Design production process and delegation of tasks to direct reports  
  • Maintain consistent dialogue with Design Management to ensure alignment with design intent and assortment goals during prototyping phase and design process 
  • Clearly communicate project status and manage priorities with leadership input to cross functional partners and pro-actively to Supervisor
  • Attend and host meetings representing Design department as needed 
  • Oversee multiple projects and processes to ensure timeline and accurate completion of projects 
  • Build effective processes and improve existing workflows
  • Seek and contribute to the development of new digital tools and design methods
  • Oversee proper use of, maintenance, troubleshooting and arranging service of 3D printer and related software (Magics and Envisiontec - Perfactory) as needed 
  • Set standard of organization and for all 2D and 3D shared files and design reference standards  
  • Establish best practices for design processes and implement process improvement as needed 
  • Visit vendors overseas and attend trade shows as needed 


Design Team Member 

  • Champion the Kendra Scott design aesthetic, quality expectation and innovative mindset  
  • Maintain a high level of communication and collaboration with Supervisor and members of the design team to ensure continual progress toward timely, accurate and cohesive assortment completion   
  • Confer within design team and cross functional teams to establish and assess best practices for day-to-day operation and organization of all shared design data   
  • Contribute own and regard others personal aesthetic sensibilities to enrich team perspective 
  • Must be organized, able to act independently as well as take direction, and able to switch rapidly between different projects in a fast-paced environment

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have: 

  • Degree or qualification in jewelry design, industrial design, accessories design, mechanical engineering and/ or experience in jewelry/ metal hard goods manufacturing processes
  • 7+ years’ experience as a 3D Designer for a high-growth company
  • A high level of creativity, elevated taste level and excellent ability to bring concepts to life with 3D
  • An expert knowledge of Rhino 3D to create intricate 3D geometries and edit existing NURBS-based 3D models
  • Advanced ability in a rendering plug-in or software (Vray, Keyshot, Octane) and visualization skills at a high level of accuracy and precision
  • Advanced ability in a sub-d plug-in or software (T-Splines, Clayoo)
  • Background in 2D media (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign Office etc.) and other 3D media (Matrix9, Rhino Gold, Z-Brush, Fusion360, Solidworks, Substance Designer etc.)
  • Expertise in designing in 3D for physical output including CAD/technical model making
  • Knowledge of metal manufacturing, and/or jewelry specific manufacturing processes
  • Manufacturing knowledge of construction and fabrication of working, innovative mechanisms: clasps, hinges, etc.  
  • Experience with innovating, working with, and troubleshooting diverse materials: plated metals, precious metals, acrylic, wood, gemstones, diamonds etc. 
  • Experience with or above average understanding of jewelry product development and manufacturing process, and experience in 3D printing, post-processing and basic 3D printer maintenance
  • A proven ability to break down larger initiatives into consumable achievable tasks to achieve departmental and company objectives 
  • A solutions-oriented mentality with a data driven approach & ability to clearly articulate plans and ensure team is aligned
  • Successfully launched products that demonstrate complex product design solutions 
  • A growth mindset: track record of leveraging past learnings, encouraging new ideas and smart risk taking in self and others
