Summer Endowment Intern, Center for China Analysis

Location:                    New York/Washington D.C.

Department:              ASPI Center for China Analysis (Domestic Politics Pillar)

Reports to:                 Fellow, Chinese Politics 

Job Type:                   Temporary

FLSA Status:             Non-Exempt (Overtime-Eligible)

Compensation:          $16.00/hour (New York); $17.00/hour (Washington DC)

Schedule:                   Max 30hrs/week; Monday – Thursday

Duration:                   8 weeks

 

Summary:

The Summer Intern will have significant opportunities to contribute to CCA projects. They will collect and analyze sources on Chinese elite politics, political institutions, and policy activity for the flagship “Decoding Chinese Politics”product, the monthly “Inside the Beijing Beltway” report, and other research papers. They will also learn about other skills essential to think tank success, including promoting content, curating events, socializing ideas, and liaising with stakeholders. A capstone goal for the Summer Intern is to produce a high-quality analysis piece on Chinese politics for publication by CCA.

These tasks aim to provide a real-world experience of the work performed by leading foreign policy think tanks. CCA wants to help the Summer Intern improve their knowledge of Chinese politics, enhance their skills in political analysis for business and policymakers, and strengthen their abilities to make contributions to the professional conversations about China’s governance and international relations

The Summer Intern will become a part of the CCA Domestic Politics team and will participate in regular substantive meetings with fellows and staff to analyze the latest developments in Chinese politics and their domestic and international policy implications. They will also have opportunities to receive career mentoring from CCA fellows and accompany CCA members to China-related events.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert research and analysis on elite politics and policy developments in China, primarily using Chinese language sources.
  • Collect and analyze data on Chinese elite politics, political institutions, and policy activity for CCA’s flagship “Decoding Chinese Politics” product.
  • Develop promotional content and strategies to expand the reach of Decoding Chinese Politics and other projects related to the Domestic Politics pillar.
  • Monitor, collect, and analyze Chinese language reports on politics, political economy, and foreign policy for the CCA’s “Inside the Beijing Beltway” report.
  • Organize occasional public events and closed-door roundtables related to the work and goals of the Domestic Politics pillar.
  • Write an article on Chinese politics (subject to editorial approval).
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

  • Must be engaged in an undergraduate degree program and not yet have graduated at the time of the internship.
  • Demonstrated interest in some aspect of Chinese politics or policymaking, preferably with some research experience on elite politics.
  • Advanced or native ability in Chinese, especially in reading and translation.
  • Advanced or native ability in English, especially in writing and speaking.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a team.
  • Strong communication skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Excel.
