Computer Science Instructor

Brunswick School

Founded in 1902, an independent, college preparatory day school in Greenwich, Conn., providing character-based education for boys in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12.

 

Position Summary

Brunswick School seeks a computer science instructor to teach at least four introductory computer science courses — including Introduction to Python, Introduction to Web Design, and Introduction to Physical Computing — to students in grades 9-12. The computer science instructor will be responsible for developing, planning, and implementing effective curriculum and lessons plans that facilitate student mastery of the content.

Brunswick School faculty members serve multiple roles as teachers, mentors, colleagues, and scholars. Full-time faculty are expected not only to excel in classroom instruction but also to fulfill various responsibilities as active members of the school community, which may include supervision and transportation of students between campuses and off campus in connection with academic activities, field trips, special events, and athletic activities and competitions.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Plan effective lessons and activities to help students acquire basic computer science skills. 
  • Create a dynamic and collaborative learning environment in the classroom. 
  • Deliver instruction that builds students’ confidence and ensures they are following the curriculum. 
  • Provide students with constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback. 
  • Maintain a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere to support student learning and growth. 
  • Evaluate student learning and modify instructional methods and strategies as appropriate to meet diverse student needs. 
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in clear communication of subject matter to students. 
  • Meet classes as scheduled; notify the appropriate chair or head of school in advance of absence, and, if possible, arrange for coverage. 
  • Be accessible to students, offering extra help as needed. 
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences and communicate regularly with advisors about student progress.  
  • Stay up to date on curricular needs and suggest plans for improvement. 
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in computer science education. 
  • Collaborate with the department chair in creating engaging learning experiences for students. 
  • Attend and participate in all required faculty meetings. 
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience. 
  • Proficient in more than one programming language, preferably Python, Java, HTML. 
  • Enthusiasm for teaching, engaging students, and sparking curiosity and creativity.
  • Nurturing, adaptable approach to teaching.

Desired:

  • Prior experience as a computer science teacher.
  • Excellent presentation abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Passionate about fostering computer literacy and academic excellence.
  • Experience with HTML5, CSS3, & JavaScript.
  • Some experience with high school age students preferred but may consider middle school or college teaching experience.
  • Experience with Makerspaces, tinkering, innovation labs, design-thinking, and project-based learning.
  • Ability to learn and teach new technologies with limited guidance.
  • Proficiency in structuring, delivering, and facilitating learning experiences using a blended learning model, project-based assignments, media techniques, or online education.

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Must be able to lift and move objects such as textbooks and materials as frequently as needed. 
  • Must have manual dexterity to use office equipment, manipulate books and other learning materials, and assist students with various activities.
  • Work in very loud situations such as cafeterias and playgrounds to more moderate situations such as classrooms or large group professional settings. 
  • Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and varied contacts.

FLSA Job Classification: Exempt
