Disability Services Research Intern

The Albany office of New York State Governor Kathy Hochul is seeking an energetic Intern during the Summer 2024, to assist in researching disability services across the country, emphasizing the Olmstead Plan goals and objectives. Additionally, the intern will be crucial in fostering network building among advocacy groups to enhance collaboration and information sharing.. Interns will have the opportunity to hone research and writing skills, strengthen communication skills, participate in event coordination and preparation, improve networking skills, and apply skills to address real-world issues.

Interns are responsible for a variety of tasks, including and not limited to; 

• Responding to inquiries from constituents.
• Providing support for meetings, including meeting minutes and any follow ups.
• Assisting with event planning and coordination.
• Conducting research and analysis to support projects throughout the portfolio of the office of the chief Disability officer in collaboration with other members of the executive chamber.
• Identify unmet needs within the disability community which could be addressed through legislation. Draft a policy proposal and work to get the legislation introduced within the New York State Senate and / or Assembly. 

Internship Overview:

1. Research Scope: The intern will research disability services across all 50 states, specifically focusing on initiatives aligned with the Olmstead Plan. This includes examining government programs, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and private initiatives.
2. Incorporating Olmstead Goals: The intern will analyze how each state incorporates and progresses towards the goals outlined in the Olmstead Plan. This includes examining state policies, practices, and initiatives that support community-based services, integration, and independence for individuals with disabilities.
3. Network Building among Advocacy Groups: The intern will actively seek out and engage with advocacy groups at the state and national levels to foster collaboration and information sharing. This includes attending virtual meetings, conferences, and forums to build relationships and enhance our organization's network.
4. Data Collection: The intern will gather information through online sources, official websites, government databases, and interviews with relevant stakeholders. The data collected will encompass details on services provided, eligibility criteria, geographic coverage, and specific efforts related to Olmstead Plan goals.
5. Data Visualization Skills: The intern must apply data visualization skills to present findings clearly and compellingly. Proficiency in tools like Tableau or Excel for creating charts, graphs, and other visual representations is desirable.
6. Plain Language Writing: The intern will be expected to communicate complex information in plain and accessible language, ensuring that our research findings are easily understood by a diverse audience, including individuals with disabilities and stakeholders from various backgrounds.

Intern Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a relevant academic program (e.g., sociology, social work, public health, or related fields).
• Detailed Oriented
• Time Management and ability to prioritize tasks independently
• Strong research and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
• Familiarity with the Olmstead Plan and disability issues is preferable.
• Proficiency in data visualization tools and techniques.
• Demonstrated ability in plain language writing.
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective engagement with advocacy groups and stakeholders.
