School Health Data Analyst Intern

Project: The Impact of School Health Services in the Commonwealth, School Health Data Analyst

Organization: Bureau of Community Health and Prevention

The intern will clean and analyze school health program data collected by the School Health Services program in REDCap and potentially DESE data. Findings from these analyses will be used to inform next steps for school health reporting such as drafting an Annual Report for School Health Services or presenting findings to internal or external audiences.  The intern’s work will support the work of school nurses in Massachusetts. Time permitting, they intern will also have the opportunity to support the work of School-Based Health Centers. The exposure that they will gain in public health is data cleaning, reporting, and prioritizing; report writing (including collaboration); state government data and document review; centering health equity; state-level public health program operations; creating something new in state government.

What skills are required for this role? Must be comfortable with Microsoft Excel and a word processor (such as Microsoft Word); some experience with basic data analysis (specifically adding variables and data cleaning) in SAS, Stata, or something similar; an understanding of basic principles of epidemiology or an ability to learn them.  Data will likely be analyzed in SAS but could also be done in Excel. Free SAS training courses online coupled with mentorship should be sufficient support for whomever takes this role to complete this work (skills needed are adding variables up and creating data tables and charts, which can be done in Excel, SAS, or another program if appropriate).

Hours Per Week: 10-20 or 37.5
Preferred Eligibility: Final year of Undergrad, Masters programs, and or first year PhD students 
Preferred Academic Experience: Any major/concentration, as long as they have the relevant skills and are interested in improving the health of people who live, work, and/or play in the Commonwealth. We encourage those who have the skills and the interest to apply.
