Project: Violent Death Surveillance Project, Research Assistant/Analyst

The Massachusetts Violent Death Reporting System (MAVDRS) collects data on violent deaths (homicides, suicides, deaths of undetermined intent, and all firearm deaths) occurring in Massachusetts. It collects data from multiple data sources including data from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Toxicology, Police, and Hospital records to gain an understanding of the circumstances and other factors leading up to and surrounding the violent death. It is unique in that it uses a number of data sources and is an incident based system. These data are collected through a CDC grant. The data are used by a number of internal and external prevention partners.  Students will learn about the Massachusetts Violent Death Reporting System (MAVDRS), how the data are collected, how to analyze the database, and how the database is used for prevention. The student will meet with the supervisors/staff to focus on an area of shared interest and create an infographic/table/bulletin. Some examples of projects include: family violence, intimate partner violence, victim-suspect relationships, gang-violence, youth suicide, elder suicides etc. 

Skills Required: Experience with analytical software including SAS, R, SPSS. Skilled in Excel and other Microsoft Office software.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid/Remote
Hours Per Week: 10-20 or 37.5
Preferred Eligibility: Students enrolled in Masters or Doctoral Programs
Preferred Academic Experience: Working towards graduate degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Public Health Sciences
