Intern, Data Science

Who We Are

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.

SUMMARY:

The BioMarin Summer Internship Program will enable students to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the processes and systems within BioMarin, while gaining an insight into the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.

Global MSAT Data Science & Analytics team mission is to enable the Technical Operations (TOPS) organization for data-driven decision making. We achieve this by centrally managing and integrating data across lab and plant (manufacturing) combined with technical capability, process knowledge and tools to extract descriptive and predictive insights from data. Data Science closely partners with TOPS organizations and owns the business processes for data analytics that support process monitoring, deviation analysis, process optimization, change impact assessment, and strategic capacity planning.

JOB DESCRIPTION/PROJECT:

Data Science & Analytics team is on a journey to make our data more accessible to end-users and maturing our Data Culture. We want to give our Process SME’s, Analysts and Scientists more time for Science by eliminating any non-value-added manual data movement steps. This role will have an opportunity to work on diverse projects which significantly improve the end-user experience working with Data and improve our Data analytics capabilities.

Sample projects:

  • Converting structured data managed in Excel/Word/PDF documents to SQL databases while still allowing the end-users flexibility to manage their data.
  • Automating the clean-up and transformation of semi/unstructured raw data from lab instruments and integrating with Analytical tools.
  • JMP Scripting to allow end-users to automate the data pull from data warehouse.
  • Text Analytics - NLP, TFIDF, Topic Extraction of Deviation data

Required Skills:

  • Programming in Python/R, SQL
  • Comfortable working with Structured and semi/unstructured data
  • Data Analysis – ability to work with large data sets and analyze data using Microsoft Excel Python, R Shiny or other BI tools.
  • Capable of independently researching and solving technical problems
  • Ability to collaborate with end-users/stakeholders to understand the requirements and translate them to technical/functional (UI/UX/Database) designs.
  • Presentation skills – presenting complex concepts to diverse audience in easy-to-understand manner and narrate a story out of the analysis.

Desired Skills:

  • High level understanding of Data Modelling and Data Engineering principles
  • Understanding of code repositories (Git) and good documentation practices
  • Microsoft Power Platform (Copilot, Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataflows)
  • Basic understanding of REST API
  • Understanding of Biotechnology, Biologics Manufacturing Processes and GMP
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to various tools, systems, and processes.
  • Creative problem solving

Qualifications/Eligibility:

  • Pursing a bachelor's or higher in Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science or Data Science
  • Student must be returning to school in the Fall Term OR has graduated within the 1 year of the start of the program. 
  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

In the U.S., the hiring range for this position is $ 21.00 to $ 30.00 per hour. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
