The Sabari lab investigates how biomolecular condensates impact gene regulation in normal development and disease. We investigate basic mechanisms of transcription and how those mechanisms are implicated in physiology and disease. Our techniques range from protein biochemistry to functional studies in primary cell culture. We are a relatively new lab with 6 group members. An important aspect of the lab operation is that everyone works together as a team with a flat hierarchy.

The position involves both maintaining lab organization and assisting ongoing lab projects. The lab organization aspect of the job requires exceptional organization skills, strong communication, and attention to detail. Roles on lab projects will require basic molecular biology and cell culture techniques including molecular cloning, cell line engineering, western blotting, and RT-qPCR. Applicant must be able to work with teams of scientists, be excited about learning new techniques and exploring interesting scientific questions while also managing the day-to-day of lab operations. Applicant must be willing to learn from and teach trainees and staff at all levels.

  • Basic mammalian cell culture (freezing and thawing cells and transfections)

Experience and Education

  • Ph.D. degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required. or
  • Master's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and five (5) years laboratory experience, including at least two (2) years at level of Research Associate or equivalent. or
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and six (6) years laboratory experience, including at least two (2) years at level of Research Associate or equivalent.

Lab Duties

  • Design and carry out detailed molecular, biochemical, and cell biology experiments using the latest equipment and technologies in these disciplines
  • Collect and analyze the data using computers and software
  • Summarize and interpret the data
  • Present the data to the research group for critical evaluation
  • Writing research papers describing the results and submitting for publication
  • Disseminating the results by presenting them at relevant research conferences
  • Contributing to the writing and submission of grants on the research topic.
  • May train and indirectly supervise students and staff of lower grade engaged in a variety of difficult and complex laboratory work tasks
  • Recommend new or modified procedures and techniques based on latest developments in the assigned field
  • Design, construct, repair or modify apparatus used in experiments and research projects.

Job Duties 

  • Organizes laboratory to which assigned; determines work assignments of subordinates, advising them as to techniques, procedures, and equipment to be utilized in solution of work problems; and reviews completed work for professional quality and attainment of desired results.
  • Compiles and evaluates research data; develops new or revised techniques and procedures based upon such data.
  • Performs or supervises design, development, or adaptation of equipment or apparatus used in research experiments to obtain desired results.
  • Compiles and analyzes results of research assignments, and submits to principal investigator.
  • Instructs medical students, graduate students, residents, and other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments.
  • Confers with industrial, governmental, or other professional groups with respect to progress or results of research assignment.
  • Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in preparation of reports and papers for publication, usually exercising responsibility for writing of segment or phase of report or paper.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
