LITERACY COUNSELOR INTERN

Major Responsibility:  This position is responsible for assisting in the delivery of a high quality literacy focused summer program for Baltimore City elementary-aged students, ultimately improving reading and math skills while increasing environmental literacy and exposure to the natural world as a part of SuperKids Camp.  The Counselor Intern also assists with ensuring safety and welfare of a class of 15-18 students.

 

Reports To:  Site Coordinator

 

Essential Functions:  

 

  1. Assistance with Delivery of Instruction
    1. Assist in delivering interactive, literacy-based lessons and math review lessons, provided by Parks & People, to SuperKids campers
    2. Assist in conducting the daily delivery of social emotional check-ins and outdoor character education activities
    3.   Assist in engaging students around environmental stewardship and encourage positive behaviors
    4. Plan lessons and their delivery with the Counselor
    5. Assist in ensuring adherence to schedule through smooth and timely transition between daily activities
    6. Assist with the taking and submission of daily attendance and necessary documentation 
    7. Assist enrichment providers with planned activities
    8. Assist in managing classroom behaviors in accordance with camp guidelines and Parks & People policy
    9. Complete bi-weekly academic reports, assist with delivery of pre- and post- camp assessments; and submitting any necessary paperwork to the Academic Mentor, as assigned. Assist with the maintenance of records including student performance, disciplinary actions taken, and other reports as requested.
    10. Attend and participate in staff planning meetings
    11. Participate in other camp activities as requested and as appropriate to position
    12. Be a positive role model for campers and demonstrate good environmental stewardship
    13. Other duties, as assigned
  2. Assist with Supervision of Participants
    1. Ensure that all students are actively engaged in the learning process
    2. Utilize positive behavioral and classroom management techniques
    3. Ensure students behave in a safe, respectful, and orderly manner
    4. Supervise students on planned field trips, outdoor exploration experiences and enrichment activities
    5. Assist in meal distribution and clean-up, if applicable 
  3. Participate in the Internship Program
    1. Attend Orientation and all scheduled learning sessions
    2. Submit all assignments
