Job Summary

The Pathways Fellowship is a paid 13-month training program for people from historically underrepresented and diverse backgrounds interested in starting a career in public health. Pathways Fellows will work at California local health department host sites in a variety of roles where they will improve their public health skills and deliver culturally competent services to the local community. Foundational training will be provided and will focus on the entry-level skills necessary for California’s public health workforce. Ongoing continuing education and professional development will continue through the end of the program. Those with High School diploma/GED, Associates degree, or Bachelor’s degree are encouraged to apply.

Note: This is a 13-month contract, starting August 5th, 2024, with an hourly rate of $26.68, non-negotiable.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid- point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

The California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) California Pathways into Public Health (Pathways) Fellowship Program operates in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The Pathways Fellowship is an innovative paid training program for people interested in starting a career in public health by working at a local health department in California. The Pathways mission is to increase the workforce capacity of local health departments across California by providing training, support, and work experience for people from historically underrepresented and diverse backgrounds.  

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field; and/or equivalent experience/training (e.g. Associates degree + 2 years work experience; high school diploma + 4 years work experience)
  • Ability to develop relationships and communicate with individuals in a professional and empathetic manner, maintaining emotional and cultural awareness
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with clients, community members and community organizations
  • Ability to work effectively and build trust with a wide range of diverse individuals (e.g. all ages and from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds)
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing, with the ability to contribute to clear and concise reports, presentations, and documentation
  • Skilled in the use of a personal computer and basic software applications (Microsoft Word, Outook, Teams and/or Zoom)
  • Basic organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and meet assigned deadlines
  • Ability to manage tasks independently (with guidance and supervision) and know when to ask for support from supervisor and/or preceptors 
  • Ability to work in-person and travel locally within the host site local health department per the jurisdiction protocol 
  • Ability to be nimble and flexible, adjusting to changing situations and circumstances
