Summary
The 2024 Visual Resources Internship at the Rakow Research Library of the Corning Museum of Glass will provide students with valuable, practical experience in a specialized library while contributing to projects that advance the Museum’s strategic priorities. The full-time Visual Resources Intern will collaborate with the Rakow team to organize and develop metadata for a historically significant collection of photographs documenting the Museum’s programmatic work. The intern will gain substantive knowledge of visual resources stewardship and experience in creating access to a currently hidden collection. The intern’s work also will improve access to the vital history of Museum activities in support of the upcoming 75th anniversary in 2026.
Responsibilities
Organization and Metadata
- Collaborates in the research and selection process of images for inclusion into the digital images database.
- Analyzes existing image collections and identifying masters and duplicates.
- Re-houses masters to insure proper stewardship of the materials.
- Performs original cataloging of images under the supervision of the Lead Cataloger and Archivist to aid in the retrieval of images.
- Conducts additional research (using resources available in-house) as needed in pursuit of cataloging images.
General
- Supports and amplifies the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
- Adhere to all prescribed organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Learning/Training Opportunities
- Gain hands-on knowledge of archival organization and related operations in a specialized library environment.
- Learn the specific challenges and opportunities of handling, describing, and making accessible photographs and other visual resources.
- Learn how to create and deploy searchable metadata using ArchivesSpace and other library systems.
- Learn and apply procedures for identifying duplicates, rehousing materials, and preparing materials for digitization.
- Learn the organization and culture of the Rakow Research Library, a library of distinction in the history, science, and art of glass.
- Learn the organization and culture of the Corning Museum of Glass and understand how the Rakow complements and advances the Museum’s mission, vision, and values.
- Improve career readiness by taking advantage of additional learning opportunities provided by the Museum.
Qualifications

- Ability to represent the Museum in a professional manner.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of library or archival content management systems.
- Highly accurate, detail-oriented and organized.
- Ability to organize information.
- Internship is full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday for 10-12 weeks.
