Accountant II

Overview

The Role

Our Madison, WI team is looking to add an Accountant II to their Supplemental and Group Benefits segment. This particular segment specializes in life, disability, and supplemental insurance. As an Accountant II, you will be responsible for performing accounting control related functions as well as financial reporting activities related to the group accident and health, as well as the individual life and annuity insurance products. This position will work with state insurance agencies, internal and external business partners, and other Horace Mann subsidiaries on various activities which are outlined below.

The Day-to-Day

  • Prepare monthly general ledger entries, primarily related to recording insurance activity and reserves.
  • Request monthly settlement payments to/from our third party administrators and prepare weekly bank deposits for payments received on-site.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts while also recording journal entries associated with transfers.
  • Work with internal and external business partners to investigate and clear reconciling items in a timely manner.
  • Assist with departmental projects within the calendar year, including ongoing software conversion projects.
  • Analyze individual reinsurance data files and utilize them to create Excel workbooks and general journal ledger entries.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statement filings at month, quarter, and/or year-end, assembling the quarterly statutory statement schedules accordingly.
  • Handle state filing requests and work with the compliance department at our Madison location to make sure filings are done in a timely manner within the calendar year.
  • Prepare and compile premium data for internal tax business partners, assisting with premium taxes and assessments as they crop up throughout the calendar year.
  • Coordinate and prepare data for internal and external auditors, along with state regulators.
  • Assist in analyzing and testing data in conjunction with division projects.
  • Perform back-up functions and support department responsibilities as required.

 

Role Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree majoring in Accounting or Finance, or a similar focus with additional certifications and education a plus.
  • A minimum experience of up to 3 years, with new graduates encouraged to apply!
  • Understand reconciliation concepts and necessary applications with programs ranging from Microsoft Office, Workday Financial, FinancialGo, and StatementPro.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Suite, with Excel skills being top notch.
  • A problem solver and analytical thinker with a focus on work being thorough and accurate.
  • Fantastic communicator, as we are a company of all personality types and backgrounds, so an ability to communicate with colleagues and customers alike is a must.
