Stormwater Intern

Overview

RES is accepting applications for Stormwater Management and Field Ecology Intern based out of our Annandale, Virginia office. Interns are expected to provide transportation to and from office and, on occasion, field sites.

You can expect a weekly workload ranging between 30-40 hours during the months of May through August. The work schedule is primarily traditional weekday, but also will include occasional early morning, evening, or weekend work during daylight hours when stormwater sampling can be performed.

You will be part of a collaborative team of passionate professionals who are always ready to support your learning and growth, and answer all your questions whenever they arise.

 

You will learn about:

  • Wetland and stream delineations.
  • Water pollution monitoring.
  • Invasive species management for ecological restoration.
  • Environmental permit management.

 

You will learn how to:

  • Basics of wetland delineation.
  • Analyze data to support environmental permitting.
  • Conduct scientifically sound water pollution monitoring.
  • Implement integrate pest management measures.

What your day-to-day might look like?

75% of the time you will be on the field, supporting the field team in stormwater sampling, field ecology, and invasive species management. You will also be participating in stream and wetland delineation and vegetation monitoring. Most of the work is performed near Lorton or Fairfax, VA, so plan on residing within 20 miles of these locations for your stay with us for better convenience.

You will be extensively using environmental mapping tools such as topographic maps. Training will be provided, but familiarity and interest in ArcGIS software, Google Earth, and spatial analysis will make you stand out!

 

25% of the time you will spend in the office, where you will assist the team in reporting of your findings from the fieldwork. If you have some experience with technical writing, be ready to showcase it during your interview! You will acquire a good understanding of Federal and State environmental regulations pertaining to this type of work as a result, but if already are familiar with them, this would be a big plus to your application. You will be assigned to several projects thus organizational skills and excellent attention to detail are required!

Qualifications

We would love to talk to you if you have many of the following:

  • You are currently in the process of obtaining a degree in ecology, natural resource management or engineering, or environmental science-related field and have a keen passion in wetland and stream ecology.

What will make you stand out?

  • Understanding of water quality field sampling or laboratory analysis, calibration and maintenance procedures
  • Plant identification skills for trees, shrubs, and invasive plant species commonly found in the mid-Atlantic region.
