Transportation Reporting Fellow (Summer 2024)

Business Insider is hiring an editorial fellow to join the Transportation desk this summer.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

Business Insider’s Transportation team covers big metal things that move and the industries built around them, with a special focus on aviation, cruising, and autos. 

The team writes a mix of breaking news, analysis, and reported stories about companies including Tesla, Ford, GM, Rivian, Delta, Boeing, United, American Airlines, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Lines. Reporters on the team may also produce visual features and reviews on innovative new planes, cars, and cruise ships. 

The Transportation Fellow will cover electric cars and the automotive industry. They will have the opportunity to interview C-suite executives, cover breaking news on major industry players like Tesla, and analyze trends affecting companies and consumers. They will be able to work on stories like:

Business Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices at least two days a week.

The role reports into the Senior Transportation Editor on the Transportation Desk and is hybrid out of our New York City office. Applications are due by April 15.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Writing daily stories about travel, the automotive industry, and electric vehicles.
  • Pitching reported stories that speak to the ongoing electric transition within the industry.
  • Keeping tabs on new and exciting vehicles for coverage on Insider.
  • Sourcing from analysts and customers for story ideas and quotes.
  • Contributing to team brainstorm sessions and working with other reporters on stories.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience covering industries and reporting on business overall, with a passion to carve out a compelling beat within the fast-changing world of transportation.
  • Interest in exploring who the leaders are in transportation and the possible challengers
  • Can take initiative and identify must-read story ideas
  • Enthusiasm for breaking down complex topics for our audience

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
