Photo Fellow (Summer 2024)

Business Insider is looking for a Photo Fellow to work under the photo team to produce and edit original images for our newsroom, help source and direct freelance photographers around the world, and ensure quality photo selections across our stories and homepage.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellows are encouraged to come into our New York, LA, or San Francisco offices two times a week.

The Role & Team:

The Photo Fellow will tackle a wide range of daily assignments and responsibilities, including assisting and editing support for large-scale projects, overseeing our homepage selection, and assigning out stories. We also expect this fellow to pitch and execute photo-based stories of their own throughout the fellowship.

This fellow will also assist by finding and coordinating with photographers, placing imagery on our site, and fulfilling in-house image requests from the newsroom. They will also regularly help reporters find great images for their stories both through our wires and licensing. 

As a Photo Fellow, you’ll gain valuable experience collaborating with journalists and other creatives to brainstorm, create, and edit photo visuals across all of our verticals.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Experience with photojournalism or documentary work
  • Knowledge of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Mac proficiency
  • Experience with graphic design, styling photoshoots, and prop selection a plus
  • Experience working with wire image services (Getty, AP, Reuters, etc.)

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has a passion for photojournalism and visual storytelling
  • Thinks creatively and conceptually
  • Works well under tight deadlines and is able to juggle multiple projects at a time
  • Is comfortable pitching and defending your own shoots and visual story ideas
  • Is excited to help us build our freelance photography network and knowledgeable of the industry
  • Is open to receiving and giving feedback and critiques
  • Has excellent communication skills with teammates and Senior Editors
  • Is willing to expand and practice skills outside their expertise or comfort zone

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
