World Wide Waste Video Production Fellow (Summer 2024)

Business Insider is hiring a Producing Fellow to join our World Wide Waste team to produce videos. 

This is a six months full-time position working 40 hours a week Monday - Friday.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

Fellows in this role will spend their time doing meaningful work researching, writing, fact-checking, shooting, and potentially editing news related videos. They will have the opportunity to create videos like How The World's Largest Paper Company Makes 1/3 of Cardboard Boxes In America, Most Ocean Plastic Flows From Rivers. Can Giant Trash Barriers Stop It?, and the Emmy-nominated A New Law Could Clean Up One of America’s Most Polluted Neighborhoods.

The fellow will create videos as well as assist the team in reporting for a wide audience across the web and various social media platforms. Candidates should be familiar with our existing videos and eager to contribute work in our style. 

This role reports directly to the Senior Managing Producer, and sits on the video team. This role will be remote with an option to work in our NYC office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research potential stories
  • Shepherd stories from pitch through
  • Fact checking
  • Possible editing assignments
  • Assisting in the production of other stories
  • Going into the field/assisting with filming

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience reporting and writing (school publications are okay)
  • Ability to turn in-depth research into clean and compelling video scripts on deadline
  • Proficiency with Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop is a plus
  • Experience using audio and digital video equipment including Canon and Sony cameras is a plus
  • Experience shooting great video on smartphones is a plus
  • An interest in covering environmental and climate-related stories
  • A thoughtful approach to storytelling and journalistic responsibility

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
