News Video Editing Fellow (Summer 2024)

Business Insider is hiring a video editing fellow to join our news team and work on stories and motion graphics for Risky Business and other shows across the team.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

The fellow in this role will spend their time editing news videos across a range of formats including Risky Business, Decoded, and Supercuts. Recent examples of each format include How Millions Are Trapped In Modern-Day Slavery At Brick Kilns In Pakistan , Inside Putin’s Secret Bunker And Billion-Dollar Palace In Russia and Why Russia Is Racing India To The Moon’s South Pole

The ideal candidate should also have basic knowledge of After Effects and a passion for animation. They will work closely with videographers and producers to create videos for a wide audience across the web and various social media platforms including Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Reels. 

This role reports directly to the Supervising Producer. Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices in New York City/London/LA/SF at least two days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research story ideas
  • Quickly execute scripts into visually engaging videos that will be shared across platforms
  • Collaborate with the larger news team on pre-production, production and post-production workflows
  • Strong skills in Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and After Effects. Proficiency in Illustrator and other Adobe software is a plus.

The ideal candidate has:

  • A passion for visual storytelling through video
  • Experience shooting with Canon, Panasonic, and Sony cameras is a plus
  • Excellent news judgment and an interest in daily news
  • Strong pre-production skills including creating shot lists
  • Experience organizing and assembling/managing gear is a plus

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
