Anticipated Appointment Length: 4 Months
April 29, 2024 – August 30, 2024

 

Join our Wildlife team and contribute to the Northern Leopard Frog Recovery Project, a Washington State Endangered Species.

 

In support of the Northern Leopard Frog (NLF) recovery team, these positions will assist with reintroduction efforts by removing all life stages of bullfrogs in areas that are co-occupied during the active season.

 

This is an opportunity to contribute to the Northern Leopard Frog Recovery Project.

 

You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork, assist with reintroduction efforts by removing all life stages of bullfrogs in leopard frog reintroduction areas.

 

We are seeking candidates to perform surveys for all life stages of bullfrogs during all active months.

 

Here are some things you will be doing in this role:

 

Bullfrog Control Work: 

  • Perform surveys for all life stages of bullfrogs during all active months.
  • Remove all life stages of bullfrogs in the translocation areas using gigs, netting, hand capture, trapping, firearms, and other approved methods. 
  • Performs visual encounter surveys for northern leopard frog on reintroduction sites and native sites, following established protocols, often during hot, summer conditions.
  • Monitor NLF (all life stages) that are held in enclosures.

 

Data Management: 

  • Organizes, enters, and edits field data in spreadsheets (Excel).
  • Enters and manipulates spatial data with use of GPS units and GIS software (ArcGIS, ArcOnline, Survey123 mobile app).
  • Summarizes data.
  • Literature review/research.
  • Maintains records of volunteer efforts and daily activity logs.

 

Infrastructure and equipment maintenance: 

  • Construction or repair of pre-release and in situ enclosures with use of hand tools.
  • Minor equipment repairs and maintenance.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Mostly outdoor (>80% of time), with temperature/weather extremes (hot, humid, muddy, and wet).
    • Fieldwork includes heavy lifting (up to 40lbs), walking up to 6 miles a day in rough, muddy terrain, bending/stooping, working while wearing waders and other wetland field gear, and working in areas with large populations of biting insects.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
  • Schedule:
    • 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday.
    • These positions have an irregular work schedule, including early mornings, night shifts, and occasionally weekends.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Infrequent, but may be needed occasionally.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand tools, 4x4 pickup trucks, ATV and boat operation, gigs, nets.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Regularly interacts with project partners, volunteers, students, and occasional field encounters.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science, and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

Or
 

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.


Please note:

  • College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely related field will substitute year-for-year for experience, provided the work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.


License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

  • Strong interest in herpetology and herpetological field techniques.
  • Interest and desire to conserve endangered and/or rare non-game species.
  • Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or biology.
  • Experience with frog and tadpole identification and vocalizations, specifically Northern Leopard Frog, American Bullfrog, Pacific Treefrog, and Great Basin Spadefoot.
  • Experience as crew or team leader, comfortable in large groups, and able to work independently.
  • Creative and adaptive with good problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to plan work schedules. 
  • ATV and boat experience.
  • Understanding and experience with the proficient use of small-bore firearms for wildlife control.
  • Experiencing handling amphibians and/or other herps.
  • Comfort working at night and during other non-typical work hours.
  • Independently utilize GIS software (working knowledge level).
  • Able to handle remote field conditions, navigation, and strenuous hiking.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
