Position Title: Streamflow and Data Management for Quabbin Reservoir Watershed

Location: 100 Winsor Dam Rd, Belchertown, MA – Hybrid

Duration: June 3rd – August 16th, 2024 

Brief Description of Internship Position:

We are seeking a motivated Streamflow and Data Management Intern to join our team for a seasonal internship opportunity. The intern will collaborate closely with the Environmental Quality section of DCR-DWSP, assisting in streamflow measurements, data collection, and management tasks related to stream and water quality data. The internship will also involve analyzing regional long-term precipitation and temperature records from NOAA weather stations, specifically focusing on their correlation with streamflow and regional hydrology. Additional opportunities may arise to contribute to other environmental monitoring projects as time and interest allows. This internship offers valuable hands-on experience in streamflow monitoring and data management techniques, with the intent to provide the intern with career-building opportunities in environmental monitoring.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in conducting field-based streamflow measurements using standard hydrological techniques and equipment.
  • Collect and manage stream and water quality data, including data entry, quality control, and analysis.
  • Support the maintenance and calibration of field equipment to ensure accurate measurements.
  • Visualize regional long-term records of air temperature, precipitation, and hydrology to assess trends.
  • Collaborate with team members to analyze and interpret streamflow and water quality data.
  • Compile findings and contribute to the preparation of reports summarizing research outcomes.
  • Participate in other environmental monitoring projects as time and interest allow.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

- Completed coursework in the environmental sciences (e.g. ecology, hydrology, chemistry, biology, and/or related disciplines)

-Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc)

-R, R-Studio (helpful to have a background but not entirely necessary, just be interested in learning to code!)

- Candidate should be prepared to work outdoors under varying environmental conditions and should be comfortable carrying monitoring equipment over short distances (0.25 miles) and over uneven terrain

Other relevant information

Intern may follow a hybrid schedule but in-office vs. telework hours can be determined by the applicant and the supervisor. Internship will include field work in the Quabbin Reservoir Watershed.
