Interactive Visualization Tool Intern

With over 230 members, the MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) is industry’s most comprehensive portal to MIT, enabling companies worldwide to harness MIT resources to address current challenges and to anticipate future needs. The ILP helps company executives monitor MIT research developments, identify MIT resources of interest, arrange expert face-to-face meetings with MIT faculty, advise on research sponsorship and technology licensing opportunities, and link member companies to MIT-connected startups.

Visualizing the distribution of our current ILP members by geographies or sectors can be used to assess the alignment of our portfolio with MIT’s global ambition.  The objective of this internship is to develop and deploy an interactive visualization tool that can be used to better understand the composition of our overall portfolio of ILP member companies.

During this internship, you will:

  • Establish a list of information required for each member, and map storage of the data in our existing systems
  • Identify options to visualize MIT ILP members portfolio and introduce a degree of interactivity for Program Directors
  • Develop Minimum Viable Product
  • Organize feedback sessions with selected Program Directors and other potential users to further refine the visual representation
  • Finalize visualization tool
  • Present to MIT Corporate Relations team

This internship offers a talented student the opportunity to work closely with our team. You will work both collaboratively while engaging in team meetings and impromptu interactions, and independently as you work to design and implement the implement the interactive visualization tool.

The successful student will have strong data science / data visualization skills obtained from coursework and projects incorporating data mining, data visualization, and associated skills, experience with visualization tools, and be artistically-inclined.  Experience in and/or knowledge of graphic design or visual arts will be very helpful for this intern’s success. Other skills, including knowledge of web development technologies, coding skills, and data mining techniques will be a strong plus for the successful student.
