Database Intern – Transportation Funding (Summer)

The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking a summer Intern to provide assistance in the development and maintenance of databases for federal, State, and local transportation projects contained in the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  Applicants wishing to be considered for this position should apply online at https://www.nctcog.org/Careers. Ideal candidates should live within the Dallas-Fort Worth region and be able to work at least 25 hours a week from approximately mid-May to mid-August 2024. Continuing employment opportunities may be available for Interns who are successful in this position.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with database-related activities, including the development of services and systems needed to better track funded and constructed projects
  • Assisting with the integration of information with other database systems (e.g., merging data from other sources, adding data fields, populating other databases, etc.)
  • Entering data and assisting supervisor with programming, analyzing, manipulating, querying, and updating the data
  • Assisting with ensuring data accuracy by cross-referencing historical data
  • Assisting with analyzing, revising, and correcting issues related to historical data
  • Creating/updating tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, VBA scripts in Microsoft Access
  • Creating/updating tables, views, stored procedures, indexes, and constraints in SQL Server Management Studio
  • Creating/updating SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports
  • Assisting in the development, maintenance, and expansion of Web-based applications

Required Skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of SQL Server Management Studio, including writing queries and stored procedures and creating/updating reports in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Working knowledge of Visual Studio.NET, C#, ASP.NET MVC architecture, jQuery, JavaScript, VBA, ClosedXML, and Pivot Tables
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with other team members, and present ideas
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Strong analytical skills, with ability to identify funding discrepancies
  • Ability to assess historical actions, interpret communications, compile documentation, and summarize findings

Required Education and Experience

  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment
  • No work experience required

Starting Salary

Minimum of $16.00 per hour
