Job Summary:

 

The Division of Research and Innovation is seeking an Innovation Impact Catalyst Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

 

The Advantage Office is a series of departments focused on supporting and advancing the university's research enterprise by maximizing innovation, economic and societal impact. The office and its resources are a leading driver and steward for a strategic innovation economy in Oregon and beyond. This position is in the Innovation Impact Program which includes the Advantage Accelerator.

 

In support of Oregon State's Land Grant mission of continually expanding and improving its societal and economic impact on Oregon and beyond, this department supports Strategic Plan 5.0, specifically goals of (1) being a university focused on big discoveries that drive big solutions and (2) a university that fuels a thriving world and, works to align its efforts with national priorities in research and commercialization and the efforts of the Division of Research and Innovation through the Advantage Office. The Innovation Impact Catalyst Manager, under the supervision of the Executive Director for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (EDIE), will assist in executing aspects of the Innovation Impact Program (IIP) department and its Advantage Accelerator (AA) programs. Elements of the IIP and AA include but are not limited to:

 

• Diversity Equity and Inclusion plan implementation

• Focused College Engagement programs

• Broad College Engagement programs

• Accelerator programs

• Intern experiential programs

• Innovation funding programs

• The Innovation Advocates program

• Internal and external stakeholder outreach and engagement programs

 

The successful candidate in this role should have an understanding of the academic nature and priorities of the university. The individual must have a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, action-oriented, customer-focused, service environment. The job involves engaging with entrepreneurs, startup companies, researchers and students and thrives on flexible action. The successful candidate is required to work the hours necessary to accomplish the job with a minimum of three days a week spent in Corvallis. They must be able to provide high quality service in a timely manner, work both independently, and on teams and supervise 1 - 3 student interns.

 

This role requires participation in the organization and execution of programs designed to achieve the department's goals of increased societal and economic impact in Oregon and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

 

20% Portfolio ManagementWork with OSU Advantage Accelerator graduates focusing initially on companies that have received Impact funds, AID funds, have OSU IP and then student and community teams. You will spend time:

 

• Accessing the needs of each of these companies

• Help them develop a plan for market adoption which may include a product development and market development plan

• Connect them to advisors, mentors and personnel

• Connect them to ecosystem partners including state agencies, Centers of Innovation Excellence, Regional Innovation Hubs, federal agencies, public and private funders, etc.

 

30% Researcher EngagementFocusing on key technology areas of advanced technologies/materials science, manufacturing & robotics and artificial intelligence/machine learning mostly found in the College of Engineering, the College of Agricultural Sciences, the College of Science, the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Institute, the Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems lab, and with the help of college administrators, identify faculty researchers, graduate students, postdocs and other research staff, helping them to create greater research impact through the utilization of innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities by:

 

• Interacting with this group in a consistent on-going manner, through activities such as walking the halls, the use of pre-accelerator awareness programs (Innovation Day, Speaker Series, etc.) and other tools, so they learn of all the various resources and tools available to them through the Advantage Office defined as the Accelerator, Intellectual Property and Licensing, Commercial Agreements, Innovation Impact program and the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Institute.

• Through these efforts, identify researchers and research with indication of innovative, high-growth commercial opportunity and help them utilize the resources (both inside and outside of OSU) to maximize their research impact

• Recruit these researchers for the appropriate programs, connections, and resources to advance the research to a more commercial level and help them to identify the next steps in achieving societal and economic impact.

• Develop and deliver educational material to prospective entrepreneurs in product concept refinement, market analysis, customer identification, team and personal development, and business model evaluation.

• Act as a focused area resource and steward for commercialization.

 

35% Program Recruitment, Management and SupportThis position will have the opportunity to lead and support various IIP and AA programs and efforts. The IIP programs are aimed at reducing barriers to I&E engagement, fostering a culture of I&E across the OSU footprint, and supporting OSU Strategic Plan 4.0, Action 15. These duties include:

 

• Engagement with the EDIE on the execution of IIP programs including support of the Innovation Advocates, a select group of OSU faculty members who act as innovation and entrepreneurship ambassadors within their respective departments and colleges.

• Drive Accelerator program recruitment and engagement specifically for Iterate and Accelerate training programs in coordination with the other Innovation Impact Catalysts, EDIE and program support staff.

• Assist in the training, and management of the AA Internship Program. The internship program allows for student employees to get hands on experience with market research, startup processes, and business growth and development. The Innovation Impact Catalyst Manager will manage between 1 – 3 interns.

• Assist in the execution of the Iterate program.

• Co-lead in the execution of the Accelerate program.

• Co-lead in the Accelerator Innovation Development (AID) funding program, which includes recruitment, review of applicants and assisting with funding decisions.

• Assist in the execution of the University Summer Investment Opportunity (USIO) program.

• Assist with the Accelerator Impact Fund program, which includes identifying promising teams/technologies/services that show potential for significant societal impact engage in next stage funding opportunities.

• Assist in the recruitment and execution of the Moxie program for women researchers.

 

10% Internal and External Outreach and CommunicationsInternal and external communication is important to the utilization of the assets of the IIP and AA programs which leads to increased impact of research for Oregon State, its faculty, students and staff. Aspects of effective communication responsibilities for the Impact Catalyst are outlined below:

 

• Recommending and providing personal support on outbound communications including newsletter, social media, press releases, white papers, presentations, workshops, and other forms of engagement.

• Recommending and providing personal support on inbound communications including newsletter, social media, presentations, workshops, conferences, and other forms of engagement.

• Promote Innovation and Entrepreneurship as a key element of being at OSU to students, faculty, and OSU administrators in appropriate forums.

 

5% – Other Duties as assigned.

 

What You Will Need

 

• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Finance, Operations, Entrepreneurship or Business Studies or other field relevant to the position and experience with higher education Innovation and Entrepreneurial (I&E) and/or entrepreneurial and/or intrapreneurial programs

• Minimum two years of project management and process development and implementation skills.

• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and work with limited supervision to accomplish goals is essential. Excellent skills in time management.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to coordinate multiple, ongoing programs and events.

• A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

 

Due to the public component to the position, it is critical that the successful candidate in this role have excellent interpersonal skills, and positive, service-oriented manner in all interactions. The individual in this position must display excellent judgment with regard to the issues that can be managed at his/her level or delegate to a higher-level authority.

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

 

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess, and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• Experience working for an incubator, accelerator or entrepreneurial based economic development group whether public or private.

• Experience in creating, implementing and managing educational programming.

• Experience working with or in a startup.

• Experience with entrepreneurial training programs working with concepts such as the Lean Startup Methodology, the Business Model Canvas, Value Propositions, Market and Customer Discovery, Product/Market Fit and associated concepts.

• Self-starter with a solutions-focused mindset.

• Proven experience effectively prioritizing workload to meet deadlines and work objectives.

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

Some programmatic activities could occur outside of the IIP offices on one of the OSU campus’ which can require time outside of standard hours.
