GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Working with the Principal Investigator and Lab Manager, and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, conducts a variety of routine experiments, where methodologies are clearly established and non-routine experiments. Participates in the design and modification of research protocols. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using advanced statistical techniques. Composes and may present sections of research reports and manuscripts.

The Sr. TRA will supervise Asthma Research Center staff to process and run analysis on specimens in the lab. The Sr. TRA is responsible for quality control, freezer inventory systems and maintenance of lab equipment. Projects will include assays on human biospecimens collected over several years during a longitudinal project. Working with study investigators and managers, they will be responsible for coordinating sample workflow and will optimize design of current processing protocols.  Sr. TRA will present progress of assigned projects at regular meetings with study team. Attention to detail, excellent communication (oral and written), phone, and computer skills are necessary. This position plays an essential role in the successful completion of multiple clinical research protocols being conducted in the Asthma Research Center.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

 

1.       Participates in the development and planning for the implementation of procedures for research studies evaluating asthma treatments and medications.

2.       Responsible for overseeing entry level research staff in the lab.

3.       Independently performs a variety of routine tests following established methodologies. Routine tests may include separation and quantitation of labeled and unlabeled lipids by TLC, GC, and HPLC. Techniques will include ELISA assays and evaporation procedures.

4.       Performs advanced data analysis using advanced statistical techniques.

5.       Responsible for the oversight and coordination of all lab activities, including quality assurance.

6.       Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques.

7.       Maintains equipment and supply inventory in accordance with departmental procedures.

8.       Meets regularly to discuss progress of work with supervisor.

9.       Reviews, understands, and obtains appropriate certifications for study specific protocols, the laboratory and ARC procedures.

10.   Prepares and presents data reports as directed. Proficiency with MS Excel is a must and proficiency in statistical programming language (R, python, SAS, SPSS, etc) preferred.

11.   Other study related procedures and duties as assigned.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

BS in biological/physical science

Requires 3-5 years of directly related progressively more responsible experience.

 

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:              

 

1. Strong background in science.

2. Ability to attend to detail and be precise with the ability to work independently, exercising judgment in establishing priorities.

3. Must possess the analytical ability to resolve minor technical equipment problems and interpret acceptability of data results.

4. Must have experience working with MS Office tools (Excel, Word) and preference for candidates who possess skills in statistical programming language (R, python, SAS, SPSS, etc.)

5. Ability to write and communicate effectively.

6. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

7. Ability to demonstrate professionalism.

Physical Requirements of this job:

8. Able to move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds within hospital.

9. Able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
