Unpaid In-Person Foreign Commercial Service Internship in Shanghai

FOREIGN COMMERIAL SERVICE IN SHANGHAI, CHINA

Unpaid In-Person Summer 2024 Internships in Shanghai, China 

The Foreign Commercial Service (FCS) in Shanghai, China, which is in the International Trade Administration (ITA) at the U.S. Department of Commerce, is seeking unpaid in-person interns to join our team this summer. Interns will have the opportunity to work with our Foreign Commercial Service staff at the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai, China.

Opportunities include: 

  • Supporting FCS Shanghai on strategic projects to strengthen the competitiveness of U.S. industry and investments
  • Researching and analyzing issues related to U.S.-China trade policy 
  • Participating in calls and virtual meetings with senior trade analysts
  • Drafting briefing documents for Mission Shanghai officials
  • Supporting trade promotion events hosted by FCS Shanghai

Ideal applicants should have: a strong work ethic, interest in U.S.-China trade policy and promotion, excellent oral and written communication skills, an ability to work in a team setting, and research experience.  Experience in international business and Chinese language reading skills are preferred but not required.

Requirements:  Applicants must be U.S. citizens, enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university, and reside in Shanghai, China, in Summer 2024.  Please note that, if selected, part of the onboarding process must be completed in the United States before the internship begins in China in Summer 2024.

If selected for an internship:  Applicants may wish to ask their school’s career center about financial aid or other funding options for public service or other unpaid internships and to research possible sources outside school.  FCS Shanghai is open to accommodating students seeking academic credit if the internship meets their school’s requirements.  ITA interns may join U.S. Department of Commerce Employee Resource Groups.
