The National Gallery of Art is seeking several enthusiastic, professional, visitor-focused individuals to help support the operation of this summer’s Jazz in the Garden series.

 

What is Jazz in the Garden?

Every Friday from May 31 through August 9, our Sculpture Garden will come alive with musical performances. Registration to these free, outdoor concerts is required.

 

How can I help?

The National Gallery is looking to hire temporary program assistants to support up to 12 Friday concerts during the 2024 Jazz in the Garden summer series. Ten concerts are scheduled with two back-up rain dates should there be cancellations due to inclement weather. The Program assistants will be primarily involved in concert registration and event line management, as well as providing wayfinding assistance to visitors and supporting the overall experience at these events. Program assistants will be requested to support each concert starting at 4:00 p.m. and ending at 9:00 p.m.

Working directly alongside our Visitor Experience team and Public Programs team, you’ll gain unparalleled hand’s-on experience working with museum professionals at one of the most popular museums along the National Mall. In addition to hourly compensation ($40/hour) and a complimentary meal during your shift, you’ll also be provided tickets to an upcoming concert for use by family or friends and a complimentary lunch during your shift.

  • Concerts are held outdoors, in the heat of the summer. Breaks and water will be provided, but there will be limited access to air conditioning.
  • There are no seated positions. All staff will be required to regularly walk around the National Gallery’s 6.1-acre Sculpture Garden.
  • Must be able to lift and move crowd control stanchions and weighted signage.
  • Preference will be given to those available to work the greatest majority of concert dates.
  • Staff contracted will be required to attend at least one, three-hour training session prior to working their first concert.
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident of the U.S., or in the U.S. on a valid immigration visa that permits this work.

 

What are the responsibilities?

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with setting up of entry and registration areas;
  • Interact with visitors in a manner that is aligned with the National Gallery service standards and brand identity as outlined in trainings;
  • Assist with event registration and check-in (using iPads and similar check-in technologies (such as scanners) to check-in visitors with existing reservations or issue new reservations as space permits through the National Gallery’s ticketing system;
  • Provide entry coordination and orientation services to visitors attending the Jazz in the Garden concerts, including through communicating program information and entry policies to visitors upon entry and in coordination with the National Gallery security team, and answering visitor questions, monitoring crowd flow, and assisting with management of lines;
  • Answer a variety of questions related to the Concerts (performer, amenities, policies) or National Gallery (exhibitions, collections, programming, wayfinding);
  • Assist with wayfinding for visitors to the Concerts, answer questions related to the Concert, amenities, and/or art on view, observe crowd flow and communicate event policies as needed, and elevate any security concerns to appropriate National Gallery staff; and
  • Assist with other event-related programmatic support such as, but not limited to, distributing surveys, brochures or other event materials as requested.
