Natural Resource Specialist ($750/week plus stipends and health insurance)

Position Description:
This internship offers a work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development, and training opportunities. This position requires a detail-oriented and self-motivated individual. The internship will focus on application of the National Environmental Policy Act in project completion and allow for the development of knowledge, skills, and expertise to assist the project manager. The position serves as an advanced trainee performing work in any of the following: forest and environmental planning, recreation, wildlife, fisheries, soils, hydrology, geology, special use and permits, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) planning, lands, wilderness use, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Duties:

Assignments may include some or all of the following:

Works along-side of senior members to develop forest and environmental planning

Participates in the development of environmental documents to formulate natural resource management recommendations and/or conclusions

Applies geospatial technology to work performed in support of a natural resource management organization

Collects and analyzes biological data pertaining to natural resources and environmental program activities

Performs assigned phases of fire management, including serving as a member of a fire suppression crew

Conducts surveys and gathers data with regards to fisheries, hydrology, soils, or wildlife

Assists in developing restoration projects for fisheries, hydrology, soils, or wildlife

Participates in development of environmental compliance requirements for special use permits

Collects data for specified areas selected for vegetation treatments

Qualifications: 
Knowledge of basic principles, concepts and methodology of natural resources as would typically be acquired through a Bachelor's degree program within the profession in which the work is to be performed.

Having had some exposure to the concepts and underlying principles of most of the following: lands, silviculture, wildlife, fisheries, soils, hydrology, forest planning, recreation, and especially NEPA and GIS.

Ability to express thoughts both verbally and in writing.

US citizenship or permanent residency. RAs must undergo a government background check if selected.

Completion of 2 years at an accredited university, an Associate's degree, or higher.

Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals

Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions

Option for health insurance coverage during full-term
