Climate Resource Assistant

Location: Cedar City, UT or Remote

If you are interested in environmental conservation and finding solutions to issues of climate change; if you are passionate about solving issues surrounding climate degradation, environmental justice, and renewable energy; if you strive toward the goal of having a positive impact on the natural environment by fighting against climate change, then this position might be for you. This position will be part of the climate Resource Assistants and specific climate training will be provided to all candidates

 

Duties:
Key duties in 2024 include building on current & developing climate and sustainability relationships both internally and externally:

Assist in producing an updated Environmental Justice and Socio-economic Report for the Dixie National Forest using regional resources, databases, and templates.

Assist in developing and compiling information for the Forest Five Year Climate Action Plan. ¿

Assist in developing and compiling information for the Forest's Sustainability and Climate Change program. Topic areas include but are not limited to: climate adaptation, monitoring, carbon, watersheds, climate and sustainability in NEPA, sustainable operations, etc.

Work with specialists to increase visibility/action on climate vulnerability and adaptation.

Assist the Environmental Coordinator, Forest Sustainability & Climate Coordinator and Forest Writer/Editor with incorporating sustainability and climate change information into NEPA project documents.

Assist in filling out the Forest Climate Action Tracker (CAT).

Assist in the continued development of the Forest Sustainability and Climate SharePoint Site.

Assist with note taking in various meetings.

Attend monthly Regional Climate Forums.

Coordinates/collaborates with Southern Utah University faculty and interns, Paiute Tribal members and other partners to further the Dixie Native Plant and Pollinator Program and assist with updating the Southern Utah Native Plant & Pollinator Plan.

Assist with writing grant proposals when necessary.


Qualifications:

Work environment is dynamic and includes working independently, in teams, and in a virtual (on-line computer/conference call) environment as well.

Outstanding organizational skills are critical. Good writing and computer skills are important, including proficiency in Excel, Word, Power Point, and preferably GIS.

Willing to take notes in a variety of meetings. Needs to be highly self-motivated and professional, and willing to speak in front of groups of people.

Background and/or degree in climate change and/or sustainability, environmental studies, environmental policy, sustainable recreation, natural sciences, or social sciences is preferred but not mandatory.

US citizenship or permanent residency.

RAs must undergo a government background check if selected.

Participation in US Forest Service Orientation Training.

$750/Weekly Stipend

$1,000/month Housing Stipend

Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals

Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions

Option for health insurance coverage during full-term

 

*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed.
