Data Information Specialist

Location: Remote


This 26-week Assistantship program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to work on one of the most important issues of our time, climate change. This position resides in the Region 1 (Northern Region) Data, Information, and Geospatial (DIG) Directorate, which supports the entire Northern Region of the Forest Service in providing transparent natural resource data across all program areas across the region. This data drives decision-making by leadership on activities that support healthy forests and grasslands and responds to climate change impacts across the Northern Region.
Our data is also used to inform the public about land management activities. This position will be part of the climate Resource Assistants and specific climate training will be provided to all candidates.

This position requires a self-motivated, creative and detail-oriented individual that can help our team develop transparent datasets for data related to multiple program areas. This position will closely with the R1 Data Stewardship Coordinator in assisting with multiple tasks related to development of this newly formed directorate.

Duties: Based on the skillset of the selected candidate the focus of this Assistantship could include:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of the R1 Data Strategy
  • Assist with the process of identification of existing data organization vs. desired organization across all units within the region
  • Assist with information gathering and prioritization of data related needs across all natural resource program areas
  • Assist with building and development of dashboards and other tools.
  • attending R1 DIG bi-monthly all staff meetings
  • participating in relevant communities of practice to advance knowledge sharing and learning

Qualifications:

The Resource Assistant should possess the following:

  • Interest in data and how it relates to land management and climate change
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent writing skills, as well as solid verbal, and non-verbal communication skills
  • Strong data analysis skills
  • A willingness to learn new skills
  • Strong knowledge and experience working with Microsoft products including Excel, Word, Access, and Power Point
  • Strong ability to work in a team environment


Additional specialized knowledge that would be desirable:

  • Degree focus of Geospatial Information Systems/Data Science, Engineering, Business Administration, Environmental Sciences or Natural Resources
  • Software knowledge
    • SharePoint Lists, including advanced list settings
    • SharePoint Forms customization in Power Apps or with JSON
    • Power Automate to automate list workflows, including e-mail notifications, approvals, and archiving
    • Microsoft Planner



Power BI for charting visuals-creating dashboards, including Microsoft Power Queries

  • Feature Manipulation Engine (FME)
  • ArcGIS Pro
  • Python
  • ArcGIS Online, including data management, Experience Builder, Dashboards, Rest API, and Arcade Scripting


Minimum Requirements:

  • Interest in land management and climate change
  • Completion of 4 years at an accredited university, a bachelor's degree, or higher
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. RAs must undergo a government background check if selected.

Benefits:

  • $750/ week
  • $1,000/month Housing Stipend
  • Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals.
  • Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non- competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.
  • Option for health insurance coverage during full-term
