Climate Communication Intern

Location:

Olympia, Washington or Remote


This internship will focus on communicating climate change science to a natural resource management audience. The intern will work with a vibrant team of climate change scientists and communication specialists to help promote broader understanding of climate change and its impacts in the natural resource communities of the Northwest and beyond. This experience will provide exposure to the Forest Service Research & Development branch and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Climate Hubs and offers a unique opportunity to build skills in science delivery, public relations, communications, partner engagement, and outreach. This position will be part of the climate Resource Assistants and specific climate training will be provided to all candidates


Duties:

Draft communication materials for the Northwest Climate Hub, including website content, fact sheets, infographics, and newsletters, with guidance from Hub staff.

Assist in facilitating and organizing webinars.

Synthesize existing research and develop region-specific content and tools to help natural resource managers and landowners respond and adapt to climate change.

 

Qualifications:

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in communications, atmospheric sciences, or natural resources. A master's degree in a relevant field is preferred. Additional preferred qualifications for the fellow include:

Demonstrated success in science communication across multiple disciplines and for diverse audiences

Ability to edit written products to improve readability, comprehension, and clarity for non-technical audiences

Creativity and the ability to generate new ideas and methods to help accomplish program goals

Experience with graphic design and social media

Experience in rangelands, forestry, or natural resources or collaborating with ranchers, natural resource managers, Native Alaskans, Tribal Nations, Indigenous peoples, forest landowners, state agencies or other relevant groups

Advanced computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office applications

Benefits:

$750/week

$1,000/month Housing Stipend

Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals

Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions

Option for health insurance coverage during full-term
