Forest Products Climate Resource Assistant

Location: Madison, Wisconsin


The Resource Assistants Internship is a rigorous and immersive, paid internship for individuals who are interested in conservation, natural and cultural resources, research and development, or other careers. This 8-month program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting impression on generations to come. This position requires a detailed oriented and self-motivated individual. The internship will focus on forest products and allow for the development of knowledge, skills, and expertise to assist the staff at the Forest Products Laboratory in their climate change work. This position will be part of the climate Resource Assistants and specific climate training will be provided to all candidates

Duties:

Updating climate change documents and other research publications

Research impacts of climate change mitigation strategies on the forest products supply chain

Gathering and summarizing information on climate impacts on the forest products supply chain into fact sheets, reports, infographics, and presentations

Supporting the Forest Products Lab climate change coordinator on climate-related documents

Supporting climate change-related training and workshops through help with agenda development, giving a presentation, logistics, organizing speakers

Assisting Forest Products Lab staff with meetings and workshops related to the climate change mitigation efforts including the USDA Measuring, Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MMRV) program.

 

Qualifications:

Degree in natural resources (forestry preferred), engineering, or forest products

Interest in the forest products (e.g., mass timber) supply chain

Ability to write clearly and effectively for technical and non-technical audiences

Strong presentation skills

Record of publishing scientific articles in peer reviewed journals preferrable

 

Benefits:

$750/week

$1,000/month Housing Stipend

Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals

Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions

Option for health insurance coverage during full-term

*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed.
