Legal Assistant/Paralegal

Legal Assistant: Small, collegial immigration law firm located in Arlington, VA seeks bright, multi-talented legal assistant to help represent clients in their immigration cases.  Position involves considerable client interaction and responsibility for cases, including writing and research. Excellent verbal and analytical skills, attention to detail and teamwork are essential.  Strong preference for those with at least six months experience in office administrative work and a demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights. Interest in humanitarian issues, international relations, and immigration policy, as well as the desire and patience to work with the immigrant community are needed.  Spanish language fluency required.  Strong computer skills. 

Job Description:

  • Manage cases of clients seeking protection, relief, or benefits under U.S. immigration law:
    • Conduct one-on-one (primarily virtual) meetings with clients and their family members to prepare their affidavits and applications for an immigration benefit or relief
    • Provide clients with periodic updates on case developments
    • Ensure that all necessary immigration forms are completed with accuracy, efficiency and consistency and properly and timely submitted to the relevant government agencies 
    • Conduct research and prepare analyses of human rights conditions for political asylum cases 
    • Draft cover letters, legal memoranda, motions, and briefs
    • Compile submissions to USCIS and immigration court 

 

  • Assist with administrative tasks
    • Answer phones, schedule appointments, manage mail, maintain organization of client files, stock office with needed supplies
    • Help with billing tasks, including depositing checks, disbursing filing fees, and taking client payments for legal and agency filing fees

 

  • Assist with office digital communications and technology, including: 
    • Firm’s WordPress website, including adding/modifying content, troubleshooting, and monitoring traffic (through Google Analytics)
    • Firm’s social media presence (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter)
    • E-newsletter

 

  •  Position is mainly in-person with flexibility for some remote work.
