Minimum Qualifications: Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or
terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Duties Description: 

1. Marine Fisheries surveys
a. Work with Unit staff to conduct field survey aboard the Unit research vessel.
b. Assist with trawl/seine deployment and retrieval, and gear maintenance and upkeep.
c. Assist in handling, identifying, measuring, and tagging of marine organisms collected in trawl/seine.
d. Assist in environmental data collection.
e. Assist in processing/analyzing biological samples in a laboratory setting.
2. Salvage work
a. Work with Unit staff to retrieve deceased sturgeon and sharks from NY beaches.
b. Aid in specimen necropsies, sample collection, and data entry.
3. Horseshoe crab spawning survey
a. During May and June, work with Unit staff and partner agency to conduct nighttime survey– this includes measuring, tagging, and data collection of horseshoe crabs.
b. Assist partner agency, site coordinators, and volunteers as necessary.
4. Fisheries dependent sampling program.
a. Conduct phone calls with for-hire or commercial fishers and markets to schedule sampling trips.
b. Work with Bureau staff to collect biological data on crustaceans and finfish during sea, port, and market sampling trips.
c. QA/QC data and enter data into Access database.
5. Assist with other Division projects as needed.

Additional Comments: Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

This is a field intensive position, and this employee must have a flexible schedule. Start times will vary with tasks; Employee will be given advanced notice of all scheduled field work. Employee must be comfortable working on boats, including in adverse weather conditions. Employee must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Employee must be comfortable communicating with the public.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2024. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
