Summer Co-op/Discovery Biotransformation

Department Description:

GlaxoSmithKline US discovery Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK)/Disposition and Biotransformation organization is responsible for delivery of key biotransformation support (in vitro/in vivo analysis, sample management) to help drive early drug discovery programs. Within that structure, the Biotransformation team is responsible for sample preparation, analysis and mass spectrometry interpretation of GSK small molecules to ensure we deliver highest quality result with a rapid turnaround.

Job Description:

Bench Scientist responsible for sample preparation, storage and analysis of samples using HRMS systems and web-based data mining tools and databasing. Responsible for delivering data used to implement novel application of existing assays. Able to perform within timeline and prioritize multiple functions. Responsible for following standard operating procedures to maintain compliance and safety standards. Competent in basic laboratory techniques. Has the ability to work independently as well as in a team.

  • Main duties:
    • Work in a team responsible for the sample preparation, analysis and interpretation of small molecules extracted from biological matrices.
    • Use multiple software applications to drive each process flow.
    • Must have good attention to detail and be highly organized.
    • Capable of prioritizing multiple job functions and ability to work within tight deadlines.
    • Follow written procedures and maintains accurate records.
    • Effectively communicate results of work to supervisor and others.
    • Maintain instruments in good working order and reports safety and maintenance problem to supervisor.
    • Operate in accordance with various SOPs, compliance and safety standards.
  • Additional duties could include:
    • Working with various types of High-Resolution Mass Spectrometers and multiple platforms of UHPLC systems.
    • Daily/weekly quality instrument evaluation/calibration.
    • Working in biosafety cabinets depending on sample matrix.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Research, or similar disciplines.
  • Able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 6 month co-op (June - December 2024).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of chromatography, chemistry (organic preferred), instruments (mass spectrometry preferred), and laboratory procedures.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel (tables and calculations).
  • Ability to learn multiple software platforms.

Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend.
