Overview of Dept/Division:

The MTA Data & Analytics team is seeking students to serve as Data Science Associates in our intern program. Our team assembles, transforms, and manages large data sources to support better decision-making in service delivery, infrastructure maintenance, financial and administrative management, and all other business activities at the MTA. Data Scientists work closely with data and process owners as well as MTA leadership to build analytic products using programming expertise in Python, SQL, or R. They work with the teams Data Engineers, which design and build pipelines, and the Reporting group, which delivers reporting products to clients.

Project Responsibilities:

The key functions of the Data Science Associate are as follows:
- Write code to clean, combine and transform data generated from business operations
- Design and document algorithmic process to carry out data transformations
- Incorporate quality checks in data processes to ensure sustainable accuracy
- Update existing data processes to manage input changes and new business priorities
- Other tasks as assigned to achieve the goals of the team

Qualifications:

All candidates must have:
- Strong data analytic skills, understanding of analytical methods (e.g., probability and statistics, algorithm design)
- Strong experience in Python, R, or SQL coding
- Experience in analytic tooling such as Excel or PowerBI
- Experience coding, documenting processes, and performing data quality checks
- Knowledge of and preferably some experience in data engineering
- Excellent written and oral communication skills

Familiarity with transit/transportation systems and the MTA organization and functions can be helpful but is not necessary and can be learned as needed.
