Overview of Dept/Division:

The Data & Analytics team is seeking students in public administration, planning, and MBA programs to serve as Open Data Associates in our intern program. Our team manages the MTAs effort to continuously enhance its already substantial inventory of reports, dashboards, and other data products that support the MTAs delivery of high quality and efficient transportation services in the Metro region and transparent management of public resources. The Open Data and Reporting group is the lead on user access, both internal and external, through dashboard and report development, dataset documentation, and front-end portal development. Working with colleagues in operations and support functions, as well as senior agency staff, we identify information and business decision-tool needs and opportunities, focusing on the agencys most pressing and persistent challenges.

 

Project Responsibilities:

The key functions of the Open Data Associate are as follows:
- Carry out tasks to prepare access to data products: ensure timeliness and sustainable quality, prepare user documentation, set up on portal interface
- Write and edit content for Open Data Release newsletter, Open Data Annual Plan, metrics.mta.info, and other public-facing open data resources
- Research industry developments in business performance tracking content, performance reporting design, and data access interfaces
- Other tasks as assigned to achieve the goals of the team

Qualifications:

All candidates must have:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong data analytic skills and understanding of data processing 
- Advanced abilities in Excel and some experience with business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI)
- Experience documenting data processes and performing data quality checks

It is preferable for candidates to also have:
- Coding experience in Python or R
- Familiarity with transit/transportation systems, particularly the MTA system
- Some professional experience in data science, data engineering
